AVG 8.5

I have noticed that this version is taking 2 hours per day to scan my PC. Previous version got job done in smidge over an hour..

Anyone know why?

Good answer, Munch; as per.

I have started using Avira free instead.
It is supposed to find more viruses than AVG and is much quicker. Found a Trojan on first run through.
It has a daily nag screen though, but I can live with that.
And I agree with Munch - daily scan unnecessary unless you spend your time on dodgy sites.

I dumped AVG and went for Comodo when a complete system scan increased from about an hour and a half to four and a half hours after installing 8.5. System performance was degraded too. I've found Comodo scans much faster and is much less intrusive than AVG had become with version 8.5.

I have also switched from AVG to Avira, it does seem to be quicker and do a better job

ideally a full scan would be run just weekly, any more often seems a tad overkill as new files are generally scanned on execution

I paid for a years worth of AVG when it was still decent, but since the new bloatware version i've switched to free avira (the nag screen is pretty easy to disable)

i've got comodo on the server machine purely because it runs in 64 bit, but its a absolutely nightmare if you ever try to uninstall it, wont be touching it again!

Uninstalled AVG & downloaded Avira. First run picked up a virus that AVG totally missed. Scan time reduced from 2hrs on AVG to 50 mins. so far so good Smile

Well done Mark, great.
Now, do you use Zonealarm Free as a firewall? Much better than the Windows one. Zonealarm allows you to see which programs are asking permission to use the internet - therefore another way of noticing trojans. I always use Firefox or Chrome, and prevent Internet Explorer from having automatic access to the net. This defeats some viruses that utilise IE to phone home.
