Preservation of Master tapes
Posted by: Max Bass on 29 September 2009
With so many classic recordings now being reissued on vinyl, how is it NOT possible for any loss of sound from the master tapes stored 30, 40, 50 plus years!?
Can anyone please explain the storage and preservation process? I imagine that not in every case, were the master tapes properly cared for. Even in some respects with the proper storage and care, surely there must be SOME type of tape degradation of one form or another.
I know very little about this, and thought with the resurgence of vinyl, with so many reissued LP's and box sets, a discussion might be of some interest.
Thanks,
Max
