HDX Playlists
Posted by: Art C on 20 July 2009
I am struggling to create a "Track" playlist on my HDX.
Whenever I create a playlist of tracks, and this part works OK, when a track has finished it doesn't go to the next track in the playlist but it goes to the next track on the album where it came from?
It seems that even though it is showing a list of tracks on my playlist it appears always to have pulled the whole album into the playlist.
I am doing this through the client server software on my laptop
Has anyone else found this problem and how did you get around it?
Thanks for any help
Regards
Arthur

There are some kinks in the software.
To create a playlist, I have always found it easier to put everything into a "current playlist" and then save it as a playlist afterwards, if you are using the IPUI interface.
If you go to playlist and add a track for some reason it drags the whole album with your selection. If you select a track and "add to current playlist" this does not occur.
The other way is to go to the DTC and make playlists from here. You need to put you albums/tracks on the right side and drag to the left, if you get my drift.
If you want to "shuffle", at this point always do so from the DTC "now playing" --> shuffle current playlist. You will see the list shuffle and then if you go to the IPUI and current playlist this shfufffled list will appear.
If you shuffle from the IPUI, it does not show you a shuffled playlist, but plays randomly and in fact may repeat the same track. More annoying if it plays the last track in the list it will stop afterwards as it recognizes that the "end of the playlist" has been reached.
Hope this helpss.
PS: Naim knows about these issues. Hopefully corrected in next version.
At the current time, at least, to maximize my use of the HDX, if your creating playlists etc... the best approach is to have both "windows" open that is, DTC and IPUI and use both.
I usually just add 2 or 3 albums to the IPUI "current playlist" and then use the DTC to shuffle.
If you are making playlists in bulk then doing so from the DTC as above is the fastest, easiest way.

To be fair Arther this is the behaviour of almost all players I have come across.
If you start music THEN create a playlist it will continue with the album you started. If it was the last track in the album then the music will stop.
If you start a playlist first then get your first track going you will not run into trouble.
it does it in XBMC, PLEX, iTunes (even the on the fly playlists) and it is very annoying.

Art,
After seeing garyi's reply, I thought maybe I should clear up one item. If you select a track in the following manner and not the way I described then you will start a playlist of the entire album beginning with the track you selected:
Browse music-->artist name-->show albums-->show tracks.
If at this point you click on a particular track and then choose "PLAY NOW" you will hear the track selected and the "current playlist" will reflect the entire album with the list starting at the track you selected. if you do as I described above using "add to current playlist" this does not occur and you'll get the track you want.
If you're doing alot of track adding to get a playlist go throught the DTC as I said above.

Gary1, do you happen to know anything about the forthcoming update? E.g. bug fixes, added functionality?

Nope, I was told by tech support that they would get back to me an never heard a word. I followed up a couple of months later and was told that they were working on all of the issues that I contacted them with.
I don't even know what issues were addressed in the firmware update.
I hope that when Naim releases the new software they publish a paper on their website that fully explains what changes they have made to the software and any associated instructions, if necessary or at least instructions included in to download/upload whatever. This is not too much to ask and will probably go a long way to eliminating any number of unnecessary emails and telephone calls.
The HDX instruction manual wasn't the greatest to begin with and they never even corrected the error about setting up your IPUI and the HDX name with the serial number which was never needed to gain web interface access.

Gary1,
When I've ripped a CD which has a track with a question mark (?) in its name, I've noticed that the question mark was replaced by a minus sign (-). I started the DTC to change it back to a question mark, but it seems not possible. I've had some similar experience with an album containing an ":" (is it called a relation sign in English?) in the album title.
Did you have a similar experience?
Regards,
Michel

Michel,
No I have not had this experience as none of my rips had symbols in them. However, when I ripped Arvo Part Tabula Rosa it did not identify the artist, so when I went and physically changed the name I have no way of adding the "double period" symbol above the "a" in Part, so these are now recognized as 2 different artists, unless I go and change the correct one to become incorrect. Limitations of the English language.
