Cartridge help

Posted by: mrm on 20 May 2003

Hi Guys,

It is time to change the cartridge on my Rega P3, and I thought that I woudld draw on the wealth of experience found on the forum.
I currently use an Ortofon MC15 Super2, which I really like, and was simply going to replace it with another, however looking at mantra-audio.co.uk I see that cartridges can be traded in like for like or for upgrades. So the question is, is it worth putting a cartridge like an Ortofon 25E or FL (or a dynavector)on a Rega P3? How would it better the MC15, given that treble is excellent, mid is clear , and bass is tight, and there is detail in spades?
For information the Rega has the Origin arm Mod, and plugs through a Project Phonobox SE into a NAC 82.

Any advice much appreciated.

Regards

Mark

Another good (cheap) source for cartridges is http://www.phonophono.de - I have recently dropped a Denon 103 into my LP12/Aro. They stock Ortofons and Dynas too, at good prices.

Partly chose the Denon as I wanted to see what the fuss was about, and at £80, it doesn't matter if the 4 year old grabs it Mad

I have a rega planar 3 with the origin live structural modification, coupled to a NAC82/Supercap/250/Allae system, using the 522 boards.

I've gone from Linn K9 to Reag Exact to Dynavector 10x4 mk2. Without a doubt, the DV is a fantastic synergistic match for this setup. Don't even think about it, spend the £200 on the DV.

Too damn right - I have a vanilla Planar 3 (ok, with the PSU upgrade and the RB300/tungsten) and the 10x4 Gold rocked in it - until I killed the cantilever - damn boron!

Anyway, they also use this combination in Audio-T Reading to awesome effect - the 10x4(or 5!) is well worth it. Me being a wuss though, I went back to MM so if I break it this time, I don't have to take the deck in to get the thing sorted!

Richard

What do you think of the Denon 103? I am considering buying one myself an an upgrade from a Stiltoned MP11 Boron

Well, it's a low output MC (I believe the 160 is a high output MC if that helps). It replaced an original AT OC9, which was past its best. I don't think I've lost too much "detail" (though comparing a worn cart with a not run in one is unfair). Now it's run in, I ought to drop the OC9 back onto the Aro and compare, but I'm pleased with the 103 as it stands. I don't think there's anything to touch it at or near the price.
