WOMAD 2002

Posted by: calum scott on 29 July 2002

I listened to some of BBC radio 3's coverage of the weekend's events and thoroughly enjoyed what I heard. It's not the sort of music I listen to a lot but I am interested in finding out more and will be happy to take any recommendations from those who are more familiar with "world" music.

The real reason I tuned in however was in the hope of hearing Terry Reid who played sets on the Friday and Sunday. He was definitely there but you wouldn't believe it from the BBC coverage. He doesn't even get a mention on their web-site which is otherwise excellent.

Did anyone on the forum go to the festival and hear Terry? Did anyone hear anything on the radio and better still manage to record it?

Let me know.

Thanks,

Calum

'World music' is a broad church.

Tell me what grabbed your attention at Womad and I'll see if I can point you in similar directions.

A good place to have a browse yourself is the Radio RealWorld website.

Orchestra Baobab were stunning.

madosini and tartit, among others, were excellent - most of the R3 recorded stuff is up on the web (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/world/womad2002/onstage.shtml) - and it all will be up soon. So you can listen anytime you want.

A real highlight was Ronu Majumdar and Trilok Gurtu on Saturday not broadcasted on R3) - with Antonio Forcione on guitar. The combination of Forcione, Gurtu and the tabla player was amazing and showed off Forcione's rhythmic strengths (after a slightly dodgy start)

cheers

So that was the often-mentioned Forcione! (so now I know)

Bob Brozman and Rene Lacaille last thing on Sunday was my fave! ( I didn't buy the CD at the Womad shop and will now have to order it from somewhere...) Also enjoyed Abdelkader Saadoun, Souad Massi and Cara Dillon.

I did hear/see Terry, but only briefly. Most of that time was him arguing with the sound engineer, then giving up on getting his guitar sound correct and just singing with a piano accompanist.
