Dilemma ... should I trade the Tukans for a pair of Intros?

Posted by: quincy on 27 January 2002

I listen mostly to acoustic music and the Tukans are perfoming great and I don't need to change them.

My buddy Svelte Dave suggested that I give the Intros a try. I have heard that Naim speakers need to be placed against a wall but my setup has 3 meters of space to the rear.

What do you cats think?

Intros are designed as wall proximity speakers. They prefer being quite close to the rear wall to give good bass rendition. They are happy to be further from the rear wall than other Naim speakers, but not 3 metres away. Typical installation is anything between 15 - 30 cm from the wall. Much further and the bass suffers, unless you're in a bass-heavy room (e.g a 3-metre cube).

Frank

Behind the speakers is as near a dammit a 3 meter cube ... housing only a table and six chairs with a bookcase along one side of the cube. The far end of the cube is a heavy plate glass sliding door ( thickly curtained at night ).

They might sound fine then??

I got my hands on the Intros and put them in place of the Tukans at either side of the opening in my music room.

Result? BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM ... and I had yet to put Hooker into the Karik 3.

Move them away from the opening and the problem was cured.

Very sweet sounding if the room could do them justice. So I'll stay with the Tukans and their rear ports. Quelle dommage.
