Linn Kan's vs Neat mystiques

Posted by: mathew farley on 22 July 2003

My system cd 3.5, 102 pre, 180 power and Mk 2 kans

I would like a bit more depth but am wary of ported speakers (I'm guessing that mystiques are ported)

I rarely listen above 9 o'clock so need something that sounds involving a low volumes

I've tried Hi-caps and found they took the fun out of my music at low volumes

Could Neat Mystiques be the answer?

Mathew,
There's a direct comparison of Mystiques to Kans here:

I have Mk1 Kans on KanII stands, but the rest of my system is similar to you (only a 72/Flatcap instead of a 102). I am sure that there are people far more expert than I at getting the best out of Kans, but there are a few things that helped me. Swapping NACA4 for NACA5, and using Naim connectors, so that I could get my speakers as close to the back wall as possible made a big difference, as did ensuring that my stands and speakers were dead level. I've also tightened the driver bolts up. Lastly, I added Mana Soundbases, as my floor is wooden and flimsy. This made a big difference for me, both in terms of depth and quality of the bass. I was pleased with the effect of putting them under the stands, but YMMV. It should be noted, I didn't compare them against homebrew equivalents, such as those Tom Alves knocked up for his SBLs, and he seems equally smitten with there effect. Also, I've since heard than I may not have mine setup optimally, so maybe I could get more out of mine.

Anyway, if you want to try soundbases, there's a moneyback following a trial period available. For Kans, you need size two.

My spikes are going straight into a concrete floor so find it hard to believe that an extra level of metal could make any difference, i know that speakers sound different at different heights, could this be why soundbases change the sound?

I,ve got a couple of days off work so im going to dem some petites and mystiques and will report back.

Arf! I remember thinking that. Try them, but don't rush the install (allow an afternoon at least).

Best;

Mathew,

get a pair home and see how they sound. Its not until you listen to them in your own listening room can you really find out how they sound.

I find my Neats come alive at lower listening levels and have a wonderful balanced sound.

Let us know how you get on with them!

Regards

I note that Neat recommend use of Mana Soundbases with their floorstanders.

I think maybe there's some life left in the Jaw thread.
