72/140 demo vs Nait-2 on Kans

Posted by: Alco on 25 May 2001

Hi folks,

Well, today was a remarkeble day.
I knew my Naim-dealer had a 72/140 for sale.

So,...today I rented a car and on this sunny afternoon I went to my naim-dealer.

I told him about the topics on this users-forum,and about my curiosity regarding the 72/140 vs my Nait-2, driving Linn Kan-ll's.

When I came in the demo-room, the 72/140 combi was already warmed up. The Kan's were placed on Sound-factory stands. (almost identical to Kan-stands)

After listening to some Lyle Lovett and Eva Cassidy I must say that I wasn't that impressed!

Sure, the 72/140 gave Eva some more room to sing and the imaging was a little more stable,
but.... I couldn't notice a more controlled,
tighter bass.
With the 140 driving the Kan's I really expected
some more control over the low-end.

So, to make it short. The improvement weren't as
big as I expected. It wasn't worth the big bucks
to me, so... I kept my Nait-2 and I bought me
a SoundFactory - Tripod Equipment stand.
(very light,very stable)

Well, So far for my report on the 72/140 demo vs Nait-2 on Kans.

Greetings,
Alco.

I just had a quote from Music Line in Germany: 389 Euro for Nait 2 recap. Is it more expensive over here, or do you considder that cheap?

Best regards
Erik

I was wondering about that myself Eric. It's $300US for a recap in the states. I've decided to put that $300 plus the trade-in/sale of the Nait 2 toward a 5i if I find it's better than the Nait 2.

I had a Nait 2 with KanII speakers some years ago.
I then did my usual thing of a "Blind Test" at my dealer, comparing the Nait 2 Vs 72/140.
I came away with the 72/140 as it simply made me enoy the music so much more. I found it was better in all respects and obviously, I felt it was worth spending the extra money to get those improvements into my home :-)
As I say, I did a blind test and listened to just a few songs on each system but felt the difference was immediately noticeable.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Hmmmm... interesting about the 72/140 versus Nait 2. I've now moved to 82/HC/250 (all olive style, '98/2000 vintage) and can honestly say that whilst there's no denying the 82-based system's superiority, at this stage in the proceedings I remain very impressed by how close the Nait gets to the 82/HC/250 in the basics - I mean, 'musicality', boogie and listenability.

What the 82/HC/250 adds over the Nait 2 is that authority, better frequency extremes and a bit of detail (most noticable on the LP12/Aro/Armageddon, but even noticeable on cd recorder playback). After a few days the 82/HC/250 settled down a bit and is now smoother, too, and pretty much ticks most of the boxes that the Nait didn't tick.

Could I live with Nait full-time? Tough call, it's so surprisingly good that it's only on hearing something further up the line that you realise what it doesn't do, but also that those things are in many ways less important.
