Problem after DVD5 software updated

Posted by: David Young on 16 October 2005

After updated with the latest softwares (decoding and control) for DVD5, I discover that the output level of Dolby 5.1 format via stereo DIN output become very low compare to other formats such as DTS or Dolby 2.0. It happens with all the DVD with Dolby 5.1 format only. The sound becomes very soft. Is there anyone has the same experience and the solution?

Thanks

David

Talking about bugs after the first software update.
Playing DVDs, If I use fast rew/forward functions, sound is lost back in play mode both in DD and DTS. I have to push stop, then push play again to have the sound back.

Appparently Naim are now back on the case since the launch of the nvi.

Look out for another software update in the new year.

Hi David,
I've noticed this on my DVD5 and on my previous player (Denon) and I have the answer.

It could be one of two reasons:
1. If you have the multi-channel option fitted; then the L&R DIN outputs are L&R only i.e. they do not contain the centre and rear info, therefore your dialogue channel is lost. you will only hear the L&R effects and a bit of dialogue.
2. If you don't have the multi-channel fitted then the DVD5 will attenuate the L&R in order to leave headroom for the other 3.1 channels to be mixed in without over loading the DACs.
(This is also true if you have the card fitted but you have some channels turned off in the OSD set-up.

Solution:
To listen to DD and DTS you need an AV2, connected via the digital SPDIF.
To listen to ‘DVD-A’ you need an AV2 connected to the analogue 5.1 DIN outputs - you'll need the multi-channel card for this.

Note:
If you are using the DVD5 as a CD player it will be fine with or without either the AV2 or multi-channel card.
I also had to do a system reset after updating to software (think it was press and hold 'clear' in stop mode?)

Hi 110db,

Thanks for your input but it is a software bug which will be addressed in next update in first quarter 2006. Meanwhile, I have reverted to previous version of software which Adam kindly sent to me and the problem is solved now. Thanks Adam for your support and superb service.

I have had no problems with my DVD5 with multichannel card installed since the upgrade. It is connected to a Denon 4802.

For DVD-A I have 2 Chord interconnects ... one DIN to 4 RCA (fronts and surrounds) and one DIN to 2 RCA (centre and subwoofer).

For DVD's I use the TOS output (DD5.1 and DTS5.1).
