Bruce Springsteen - Magic

I bought this at the weekend and despite very favourable reviews I was a little apprehensive about whether it would be any good. Anyway, it is a really fantastic record, his best in years and I really recommend it. This will probably make it in to my notional Top 10 for the year, all the songs are strong but varied. The production is a little muted but my system sems to dig the best out of it.

Totally agree. If you can get the through the compressed recording you will find some of his best work in years. There are hints to the river and born to run period springsteen and lyrically he is right on top of his game.
If you like classic ere springsteen but gave up on him in recent years then this is the perfect album to make you realise why you liked him so much in the first place.

Does this compression/sound quality comment apply to the CD version, the vinyl version, or both?

Had a "background" listen seemed pretty good to me back to normal IFAIAC. Did enjoy the Segar Sessions though.

I had a quick listen yesterday and was a little disaapointed, maybe because I thought Devils & Dust contained some of his best songs in years?
I'll try again today.

It has a kind of murky quality due to the compression but there is a lot of detail and you can hear through it.

It seems to be the way Brucie likes his discs to sound.

The songs are great but the sound is crap.

Agree. As a self-professed Springsteen fanatic, this album is fantastic (although not quite as good as some of the Boss's "classic" albums). The sound, however, leaves much to be desired. You have to wonder if super-rich musicians have decent sound systems and, if not, why not.

Also, if any Forum members have a chance to see Bruce while he is in Europe, I strongly recommend getting a ticket. This tour has been fantastic. I've seen two shows so far, and have tickets for a third when he gets back to the States.

Sorry, but it is not a compressed recording. O'Brien has gone for a busy mix which has then suffered at the mastering stage. That's not a compressed recording though.

Whichever way you wish to cut it, this is a pile of ***** as far as production/ pressing/ final product on my record player is concerned.
Totally inexcusable that the sound on vinyl should be so totally flat and devoid of reality.
For all I know it may be a decent album but how to tell....

Mike,
My tickets have just arrived for the concert in London O2 Arena on 19th December - the last show of the tour

Should be good, I love the new album and last saw the band in 1985 in Newcastle (UK)!!

Andy, enjoy the show. I have tickets for a show in late-February when he comes back to the States. (He is returning to Europe in '08 - check for dates near you.) I'm spoiled because living in the Northeast US, when Bruce goes on tour, he often plays lots of concerts in New York and New Jersey. I think on the last tour in support of The Rising, he wound up playing about 15 nights at a 15,000 or so seat arena in New Jersey and then 10 nights at a nearby football stadium seating somewhere between 50,000 and 70,000 per concert.
The show - at least on this tour - is different from the Born in the U.S.A. tour that you saw in '85. The band, of course, sounds great. The shows are shorter, but there is no intermission, no prolonged songs with stories, etc., and there is practically no dead time between songs (for most of the show, one song starts when another one ends). Some like this better, some not, but in my opinion, the shows are more intense. Although Bruce and the band are older, believe me, they still got it. The new songs from Magic play very well in concert, and there is enough of the classics to keep everyone happy.
