The Decemberists

Posted by: Tam on 23 June 2008

Recently I picked up their album Castaways and Cutouts having heard the song Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect in the background on a TV show.

I enjoyed listening the album last night, though I don't think I liked any of the other songs quite so much. However, I think I would quite like to explore some more of their music and was wondering if forum members more knowledgeable in this area might steer me in the right direction.

regards, Tam

if you do the download and or streaming thing, scroll down to "The Decemberists" under "T" and have at 49 or so live shows, including one with the Los Angeles orchestra last summer.

The Crane Wife, released on Capitol, was the first major label release and therefore has received the most attention.

Picaresque was my first introduction to the band. The second album I picked up was The Crane Wife. Have the rest now.

Jeff, thanks for the link. Haven't had a chance to see them live yet.

I like The Crane Wife in particular, worth a listen.

Just a whiff of Decembrists in the new Fleet Foxes album in some ways-a current fave at home (or will be again when my system works).

I think Picaresque is their most consistant record, the subject matter does lean towards the bleak though.
