Stupidity ... Eq Stands Question

Posted by: andrew mcmullins on 02 September 2002

Firstly I must admit to my stupidity.

After getting my nice new 135s I have run out of space on my eq racks I decided to go look for some new ones and left the Quadraspire catalogue lying about. The wife likes the AV cabinet as it will hide all the annoying wires and the almost as annoying but not quite as annoying black boxes.

The questions are:

1. How much worse does it sound that normal racks ie. bog standard and bog seat with electronics (ie. amps / tuners / DACs etc).

2. Is there any way to make it sound okay with a CD player on top if it doesn't sound okay?

I spoke to Quadraspire who said it wouldn't sound as good as it was designed for AV.

3. With a Roksan DP1, DA1, DS4 (the DA1/DS4 are half width boxes), a 72 (will be upgraded to a 52/82 at som epoint), Hi-Cap (will have a 2nd hi-cap or be swapped with a supercap), 2x135 and a NAT-01 what layout works out best. Since I'm buying new furniture it would be a shame to not get it right.

I *might* be able to get myself out of this predicament but mana will not go down well.

Andrew

ps. I'm using a Tripod with soundframe and a large lump of slate under the CD Transport atm.

some more questions that other may be able to answer...

If your wife likes the look of the AV cabinet she definitely won't like the look of M***.

Given the level of your kit you need to get the best stands you can (if the QS AV cabinet is in budget then you can probably consider all of the usual suspects).

Can you find somewhere unobtrusive to put your kit?
Can you persuade her that the spaghetti comes with the territory?
M*** owners with SO's must have overcome this issue to be allowed to have it in the house, what strategies did they use?

seagull

p.s. If/when you offload your 72 (and HiCap) in the future, I might be interested (budget permitting) - Kingston's only up the road (M3 etc.) so no 'Airport scene' I'm afraid.

My Mana racks are in my study so my wife doesn't mind. In fact she thinks they look fine but that might be because I don't have a "mega-phase" setup.

Our living room AV system & TV is on a very cute Stands Unique rack which looks great but isn't the best for sound quality.

Seagull is sitting in his car, getting more and more nervous all the time. It's an hour late and the McMullins car isn't coming. A truck driver's bulldog has taken a leak at Seagull's car. He was too scared to say anything. Perhaps highwaymen have robbed the McMullinses. Perhaps they're rocking to their highwaymen music this very minute. It's a very dangerous piece of road, out of Kingston...

There's another car. A black limo with blinded windows. That can't be the McMullinses... Only a postman would drive a vehicle like that. A woman steps out. A blonde in a shimmering blouse, with sunglasses up in her hair. Could this be Mrs McMullins, the one with the interior dec notions? Impossible. She doesn't need any interior dec. She'd be gorgeous in a sty.

Ten minutes later the blonde is still inside the station perusing the magazines. Seagull is wondering if he should just forget about the 72 / HC and make a move for the magazines. After all he's been there for over an hour now, and it might just be destiny to meet this woman, rather than score a piece of hifi. Well, two pieces actually. Tough call.

Just as Seagull gets out of his car a man emerges from the limo. Big burly guy - certainly not a postman - who opens the trunk, and whispers, as Seagull is passing "Wanna take a look?"

Seagull can't help it. He does take a look, and there they are: two half wide boxes. Suddenly the blonde is there, too, a second after the money changes hands and the kit is Seagull's. (She bought a House & Garden.) "How do you do," she says tossing her hair. "What kind of stands do you have?"

Thanks all ... its all very funny.

Seagull: I'm keeping the 72/140 for a second system (the 140 is now in the back of the cupboard waiting ...)

Herm: Yous funny. Only problem is the wife has black hair (shes of Indian descent but you made me laugh).

I showed her the mana stuff and she turned an interesting shade of green (okay I lie but she didn't like it).

Someone at my dealer (sounds like a drugs thing) talked about some Norquest (I think that was the brand; I recognised the name for very expensive interconnects) metal contraption for putting under the transport. They cost about £50 for 3 or 4. Anyone used them and know what they are like ?

Does having electronics in an enclosed cabinet (well the back is open) cause them any problems (heat or sonically)? The other issues is that the cabinet is on casters (but I do remember that Shahnian Acrs come on casters so I didn't rule it out all together).

We saw the Hutter stuff. It looks nice sounds from what people are saying fantastic (you can hear a but coming) but it makes the stands very tall (groans) and you still get the cables hanging out the back issue.

I think the Hutter racks look awful. I'm amazed your wife prefers them to the looks of Mana.

The Ash Design racks looks good with Naim kit but some folks have said it doesn't sound too good.

Chaps

Ignore Steve, he has worse taste than Vera Duckworth.

The Hutter looks good, however there are two lengths of spacers, 2" and 4" approx.

If you use the 2" spacers, you will lose 2" in height per shelf and it effectively hides the cable.

Mick

The same applies to the Isoblue.

You're forgetting that most people on here have now seen pictures of you and of your living room!

I'll give the Hutter a look. Does anyone have a web site address for them ?

The other question is still with my eq what is the 'ideal' siting of the components. I presume that putting the CD Transport, Pre-Amp, Tuner Head and DACs on one rack and the Hi-Caps or Supercap, 135s, Power Supply for the 01, Power Supply for the DACs on the other rack ?
