Canon EOS 300D

Posted by: BrianD on 22 May 2005

Ok, in the thread linked below I mentioned on page 4 that I had gone ahead and purchased the Canon EOS 300D.

Can't get on with it and not enough patience to continue trying.

I know this isn't a selling forum, so if the thread is deleted there will be no complaints from me. However, as this isn't competing with any Naim product I thought I'd take the liberty to mention that if anyone cares to make me a realistic offer for this camera I'd like to sell it.

After the '£100 refund from Canon offer' I paid £500 for the basic camera. In addition there is also now a 512mb card, a 128mb card, a spare battery and a decent camera bag. Original box etc etc.

Email to brian at 2irzyhxz at fsmail dot net if interested.

Apologises to Naim if I'm out of order with this

Just as a matter of interest, what don't you like about it and what do you think you'll replace it with? Or is it just the whole digital slr thing that's not right yet? (I'm looking at buying a 20D soon-ish).

I simply don't appear to have the ability to take decent photographs. If there is detail in a foreground, the background (sky) is overexposed and white. If the sky looks right, the foreground is too dark. I must be doing something wrong but can't get it right so the camera is no use to me. It does appear to be easy to use, I've no particular gripe or criticism of the camera itself.

Brian - have you done the 300D tutorials on Photoworkshop? They are hidden under the new XT tutorials. they won't make your photos beautiful, but they'll stop you bodging it.

I admit, I am still prone to screwing up in full manual mode, but I have progressed to aperture priority mode some success.

If you are screwing up in full auto mode, I have no idea what you could be doing.

Must say I've had quite a few pics come out VERY contrasty recently with my newish 300D several to the extent where they are unusable

Last weekend was rather bright and I have tried using the auto-bracket mode (with Program mode and RAW files) using plus/minus 2/3 of stop and one was usually usable

Apart from these few disappointments I really like my 300D

I've had the same exposure problems with my new 350D. I find that I have a near-permanent 1/3 - 2/3 stop underexposure dialled in.

I've found that the conversion from digital point+shoot to digital SLR has tought me how much I didn't know about photography! It's an interesting learning experience and while the SLR has the potential to take much better photos, it also lets the user take much worse ones Winker

I found the challenge interesting enough to stick with it, but I can understand why you might not want the hassle!

"If there is detail in a foreground, the background (sky) is overexposed and white. If the sky looks right, the foreground is too dark. I must be doing something wrong"

In that situation you are exceeding the dynamic range of the CCD and there is not much you or the camera can do about it. Short of messing around with graduated filters which is the sort of thing that gets you brownie points at the camera club but shunned by normal members of society.

Probably being a bit hard on yourself there. Once the basics of SLR photography have been mastered it’s then often a case learning the characteristics and foibles of the body/lens combination you’re using. This can take hundreds to thousands of shots and with digital you can’t mess about with different film characteristics to compensate. We’re also talking in this instance about one of the most challenging exposure balancing acts to pull off – with any camera. At least with digital you have instant review, so you can try it again and again, rather than bracket and hope for a good one.

I’ve had to unlearn a lot of stuff I knew about my previous film SLR in order to start getting exceptional results (occasionally) out of my DSLR. If you can still get a 300 it’s one of the bargains of the year. The Lovely Hell was looking for something to replace a Digital compact and after having a go on the 300 was amazed at the performance for the price. I guess the 10D (which I use) is also pretty good VFM now if there are any left in the shops.
