Alternatives to Arcam cdp needed.
Posted by: Chris Brandon on 02 October 2001
A work colleague has a 42.5/110 combo and is looking to replace an elderly Marantz cd65 mk2se with an Arcam CD72 (?...its the new ukĀ£400 model).
I am wondering weather or not to try to stear him towards a second hand cd3 or Rega Planet.
Any views ?

Chris,
I directly compared the Planet (not '2000') to the CD3-5 when shopping for an upgrade from my old Mission PCM II. The Rega sounded musical but somewhat boring, especially when compared to the Naim, which sounds much more lively and closer to the sound of real instruments and voices. For me the Rega would have been a somewhat sideways step as its presentation is very much like that of the old PCM II, ie. warm and inviting, musical, yet somewhat bland. 'Nice' is a word that can be construed as 'daming with faint praise', however the Planet is a 'nice' player, in the best sense of the word, and I could have been quite happy with it had it been a big improvement over my old player, and, more importantly, had I not ever heard the CD3-5.
Frankly, I was expecting much more from the Planet, as the media had really taken to it (ho hum), and a number of Naim Forum members considered it to be the best choice short of a CD3. As it was, I ending up spending twice as much for the Naim over the Rega, and still consider it money well spent.
Go ahead, give him a push, he will thank you for it every time he re-discovers a favourite disk.

I will e-mail him this link.
After reading the What HI-FI awards,he seems to have convinced himself that the Arcam CD72 is the way forward (I could not argue with this as I have not heard it myself, but I will still try nudging him towards a path of enlightenment )
Interesting to see reference to both the 65mk2se and also the Rotel 965BX,as I have owned both of these units in the dim and distant past,I seem to remember enjoying both.
I was also quite supprised that the Planet didn't fare better,On the occasions that I have heard it,it always left me with a favourable impression, and i have never come accross a KariK,but I suspect that it would provide an imteresting comparisson.
I suspect that this will be an uphill battle, but I will try....
thanks for the replies
