What is the opinions on SACD playback from Naim CD player owners?

Is it just me who thinks SACD playback lacks in balls and timing?

There wasn't any "aimed for sound". SACD is entirely about producing an uncopyable CD,
I too do not find that a surprising comment. The whole copy protection thing has become an obssesion for the media industry.
However it seems pretty extreme to invent 2 new audio formats, SACD and DVD-A which probably have little chance of influencing the mass consumer market buying CD's, in the belief that you can ensure uncopyable media reach the mass market.
It is also pretty stupid to do this and then seperately spend significant money to introduce all sorts of copy protection schemes on standard CD's.
If copy protection is the motivation the whole thing with the SACD (&DVD-A) becomes an exercise in futility.

Geoff,
I suspect that DVD-As can be copied using a DVD recorder.

I can certainly start the copy process on my PC's DVD-RW drive. Using DVD creator software I can record the contents of a DVD-A to the PC's Hard Drive. I have not bothered to copy it back to a DVD-RW disc to see if it plays but the software did not refuse the process, I just cancelled it.
Interestingly since I use a spare output on one of my HiCaps I can record the decoded stereo analog signal from both SACD and DVD-A onto CD-RW with little detectable loss in quality to my ears, though of course this is not a direct copy.
Interestingly when I play the CD-RW on my CDX2 it sounds pretty bloody good. Maybe I have invented a new approach to obtaining good saound off of SACD & DVD-A.

Adding an XPS2 cemented it for the CDX2 no matter what format was played,
wow. That's a claim.
Did you compare all those hi.res playes in your rig along with CDX2/XPS2?
What was lacking from DCS SACD playback compared to CDX2/XPS2?
And which system context?
I agree that adding XPS2 transformed CDX2 to something more complete.

know the dCS rig VERY well. it lacks nothing if you've got the scratch to pay for it!
so, I take it you prefer dcs stacks? More I think about it's about voicing differences than which is better. dcs stuff tends to sound *round* whether redbook or SACD.
I haven't tried a direct compariosn between Naim digital and dcs, but clearly, I preferd kps25s over dcs.
How did you find Krell SACD Standard against Naim?

perhaps part of the reason the Esoteric does so well is that TEAC is using their own VRDS universal transport instead of the same old Pioneer or Phillips that everyone else uses. it'll be interesting to see which transport Naim chooses for their DVD player. it'd be nice if they had access to the TEAC, but it's probably going to be a Phillips to match all their other Phillips-based machines.
Esoteric/Teac make fine transports. They tend to be slower than Phillps based ones tho. Phillips are notoriously unreliable. ( every single CD player i've owned with Phillips went south )
As far as DVD transports go, DVD ROM types might be a better way to go...

Joew,
The Teac Dv-50 is using a Modified Pioneer transport, not the famous VRDS transport you mentioned.
The expansive Teac P-70/D-70 combination is using the VRDS transport, but thats only for cd: it has no sacd/dvd-audio or dvd-video options.
