West African Music - Cheikh Lo

Posted by: jayd on 28 February 2003

I picked up a two-cd set by an artist unknown to me - Cheikh Lo. What a great surprise! I know, all you fans of west African music are probably way ahead of me on discovering him. But if you like Youssou N'Dour and you haven't already given Cheikh Lo a listen, I recommend him. There's an unmistakable Cuban influence here, some north African influence, and maybe even some bossa nova. It's cool how well it all works together.

The set I found is a Nonesuch release of his first two albums: Ne La Thiass and Bambay Gueej. I can't tell yet which I like better. The recording quality is great as well.

I have 3 of his albums and my favourite is his world circuit release.

It's very calming and spiritual.
