Musical Revenge

Listening to my daughter's copy of Lilly Allen's "Alright, still" earlier, I was struck by the number of humourous but withering put downs in her songs. One of the more broadcastable was:
"Oh my gosh you must be joking me
If you think you'll be poking me"
There are numerous other examples, some vicious, like John Lennon's How do you sleep? comes to mind:
"The only thing you done was yesterday
And since you're gone you're just another day
Ah, how do you sleep?
Ah, how do you sleep at night?"
The spurned lover Alanis Morissette in "You oughta know"
"And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it ....well can you feel it"
They say revenge is dish best served cold, what are your favourite morsels?
Regards
Nic

..Along similar lines ..."You've been telling me your a genius since you were 17 and all the time I've known you I still don't know what you mean ..the week-ends at the college didn't turn out like you planned ...the things that pass for knowledge I just don't understand"

No one does it better than Bob Dylan ...
Positively 4th Street
You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning
You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that's winning
You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it
You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it
I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with
Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with
You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
But you don't mean it
When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it
No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them
And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem
I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you
... except for Bob Dylan, of course ...
Like A Rolling Stone
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

The world best living songwriter (IMHO, of course) provides the best put downs though as always with a sense of humour.
Talking to this girl on the south coast of France
She was on an 18-30 but I gave her chance
But on the last night beneath the stars of Marseilles
She said Robin Asquith was funny
Oh God how I longed for a dangerous wave
So I could surf myself towards an early grave
I would rather talk to plankton than to dance with you
I hope your flight back home's a D.C.10
Nigel Blackwell's song Albert Hammond Boot;eg from The Trumpton Riots EP.
Albert Hammond Gibraltarian Singer/songwriter from the 70s, can be blamed for Cher and Michael Bolton. He did commit other crimes against humanity - the greatest of which must surely be his co-authorship of Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now". Not that he contented himself with inflicting his songs on the world via third parties. Oh no, back in the early '70s he did it himself with a song called "Free Electric Band" which proudly proclaimed ...I gave it up for music/And the Free Electric Band (he needn't have bothered).
18-30 Package holiday for young people to go to Southern Europe and drink a lot. Being a bit dim probably helped to fit in with the crowd. I think the original 18-30 itself went bust, but there are a host of imitators.
Marseille French city on the Riviera.
DC10 McDonnell Douglas jet airliner. A few years ago, their engines had a nasty habit of falling off.
Robin Askwith Sitcom actor and star of British films "Confessions of a ..." and the amazing 'comedy' series Bottle Boys. Recently (1997) popped up as a speedway star in EastEnders.

You were working as a waitress
In a cocktail bar
When I met you
I picked you out
I shook you up
And turned you around
Turned you into someone new
Now five years later on
you've got the world at your feet
Success has been so easy for you
But don't forget
It's me who put you where you are now
And I can put you back down too
Don't, don't you want me
You know I can't believe it
When I hear that you won't see me
Don't, don't you want me
You know I don't believe you
When you say that you don't need me
It's much too late to find
You think you've changed your mind
You'd better change it back
Or we will both be sorry
Don't you want me, baby
Don't you want me, oh
Don't you want me, baby
Don't you want me, oh
I was working as a waitress
In a cocktail bar
That much is true
But even then I knew I'd find
A much better place
Either with or without you
The five years we have had
Have been such good times
I still love you
But now I think it's time
I lived my life on my own
I guess it's just what I must do
Don't, don't you want me
You know I can't believe it
When I hear that you won't see me
Don't, don't you want me
You know I don't believe you

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel,
you were talking so brave and so sweet,
giving me head on the unmade bed,
while the limousines wait in the street.
Those were the reasons and that was New York,
we were running for the money and the flesh.
And that was called love for the workers in song
probably still is for those of them left.
Ah but you got away, didn't you babe,
you just turned your back on the crowd,
you got away, I never once heard you say,
I need you, I don't need you,
I need you, I don't need you
and all of that jiving around.
No so bad, until you announce live who you are singing about!
you were talking so brave and so sweet,
giving me head on the unmade bed,
while the limousines wait in the street.
Those were the reasons and that was New York,

Paranoid, moi?
Well, they told me to come on over
I made my way to New York
And they tried to have me deported
Stop me from getting work
Blacklisted me all over
They were vicious and they were mean
They were bigtime operators
Baby, on the music business scene
Oh, they looked like politicians
But underneath they were thugs
And they spread malicious rumours
Threatened to have me busted for drugs
They had nothing on me
Oh man, I was really clean
But they were bigtime operators
On the music business scene
They put a bug in my apartment
To listen in on my calls
I was looking for some motivation
I couldn't find any, any motivation at all
They were very desperate people
Riding in long black limousines
But they were bigtime operators
On the music business scene
They were glorified by the media
They were heroes who had names
They said that they would bury me
If I didn't play their game
They said I didn't know the score
And that I was young and green
They were bigame operators
On the music business scene
Tried to hold me to a phoney contract
I said I didn't agree
Had to get out of the clutches
Had to go underground you see
Now I'm living in another country
But I know exactly just where I've been
Stay away from bigtime operators
Baby, on the music business scene
Well, baby bigtime operators
On the music business scene
Oh baby, bigtime operators
On the music business scene
Well, full of names and places

Carly Simon "you're so vain" must be in with a shout, as well as Robbie Williams "Karma Killer" which both stuck me as pretty good sideswipes at previous "partners".
I suppose there is a fine line between getting your own back, and unbridled bitterness that reflects more on the singer than on the subject of the song.
Regards
Nic

How about Alice Cooper's Cold Ethyl - a song about a relationship that goes on a bit too long - i.e. way past its sell-by date.
It's the track on Welcome To My Nightmare that comes after Only Women Bleed on the complitation The Life and Crimes of Alice Cooper.

Under My Thumb and Stupid Girl. Mick and Keith at their misogynistic worst.
