Killing Joke

Posted by: Not For Me on 30 September 2003

I have just been listening to the new Killing Joke Album, and quite good it is.

They are very angry about a fair number of things, and want to shout at you about it. God, The Army, God, the economic system, no target is safe!

Dave Grohl on drums makes the drums thump and bang.

The bloke on guitar goes da. da. chug. chug., and the guitar tone is nice an varied.

Jaz Coleman growls, howls and screams, very intense.

Comes over a bit Nu-metal sometimes, but overall still listenable.

A good spacey recording, and a return to the good times for them after failing to set the world light on the rock/indie dance interface.

One word summary : 'Brutal'

I know I've said this before, and it's all IMHO, YMMV, etc, but..

I think the 'new' KJ album is one of the worst things I've heard in a long time. It's cliched, formulaic pap and the lyrics are awful.

How nice of Mr Grohl to make the drums go thump and bang. How much nicer it would have been for these talented people to have produced something with one iota of originality or insight.

If you want 'brutal' try Test Department. If you want intelligent, compelling political songs try the Gang of Four; one of whom (was it King?) seems to have made the mistake of producing this turgid pile of poo. Eek

That's wierd [doo doo do doo] actually listening to it as I found this thread.

With due respect to the friend who loaned it, I concur with Mr Jones - unmitigated pants.

Sounds like re-heated 80s out-takes. Thought Youth was now some bigtime producer?

Tim / J8hn,

It is very difficult to pull off serious political comment and stay in sight of the mainstream rock idiom. I say give the boys a chance.

GoF / Test Dept - I know them well, but can only take so-much po-faced berating, 'The Unacceptable Face of Freedom' was a classic, with that sample of the greasy politican... Now what was his name?

Would have thought that your po-faced berating threshold must be pretty high if you like the KJ album... Big Grin

How many PhD theses are there in good and bad political pop? Probably lots, and probably lots of w*nkers doing them. But there is a lot of very, very good political music out there which doesn't have to adopt the usual "power structure/greedy capitalists/military industrial complex" cliches.

The Specials, Wire and Elvis Costello all spring to mind. Equally some of the best political songs tend to be allegorical (a la 'Ghost Town') rather than berating or didactic.

Just a thought - where do 'political' songs begin and end. I always thought 'Inertia Creeps' was kinda political...

Anyone remember a band from the eighties called The Red Skins? They were a socialist "skinhead" band believe it or not !

Bloody good too !

Brian -

I remember them. They were in, um, a 'slightly different tradition' to the 4 Skins, C.U.N.T., etc, etc.

They got involved in Red Wedge which was when I started to lose interest...

My question?

The answer - Leon Brittan

Memory is a funny thing - the name popped to the front of my head on the way to work.

I never really rated the Redskins - they seemed to be more lyrical content over music, whereas I prefer that the music is not pushed into the background.

For truly didactic political berating I'll take Coldplay, Travis, Starsailor and Radiohead any day.
