Artists you've never actually heard
Posted by: Kevin-W on 31 May 2010
We were having a discussion today about artists or groups one has never actually heard.
For example, I've heard groups as obscure as Boris, Culturecide, Xhol Caravan, Alquin, Surprize, Graph, The Prats and Clogs, but I've never actually heard - to the best of my knowledge - Man, Foghat or Orleans.
Am I missing out? What do they sound like?
Anyone else never heard any reasonably well-known or well-documented groups/artists from the rock era?

Well, their hit was "Dance With Me". Think AOR - harmony singing etc.

Bach. Improvising ...

Never knowingly heard Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart. Astonishing as they were the coolest of the cool when I was a student.

Life is far too short to worry about such things. I have rarely listened to something just because someone else (or indeed many people) happen to like it. The what and why thread is a case in point.

Man - try Be Good To Yourself At Least Once A Day as a starter. They really were the Welsh Quicksilver around that time. There are a stack of excellent Man albums, but that's where I'd start...
Foghat - plod rock
Orleans - fluff
As to your question - I've heard pretty much everyone I'd want to (as far as I know about them at any rate). I'll always try and see what the fuss is about - particular if I know that someone whose taste I rate says good things about them.
Oh, and I know I've heard Coldplay, but for all their effect on my consciousness I might as well not have :-)

Ha out loud George, that cheered me.

Oh the list is too long to even begin. If I could hear one group it would have been the Beatles, but not in a stadium with screaming girls. More like in Abbey Road studios working something out like Lady Madonna.

I'd still like to see Tom Waits ...

His compositions are calculated but seem not, because he was a genius. His improvisations must have been out of this world! He would have mades Miles Davis sound pedestrian to the point of routine!

Mudwolf, I read this as "Artists I've never heard. Ever. Not just in concert". I literally have no idea what Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart sound like.

But one can have a clear idea of the sound if not the genius of the performance, because the Bach organ in Lubeck still exists! Finished in 1685 - the year of Bach's birth, and he played it as a young man - one may reasonably assuming the sound has not changed that much ...

I've only heard a few Zappa things, that would be an education but I'm not going to buy them. I just can't think of a group I've not heard that I want to. My resources are limited and just not going to keep up with all the new music out there many post about.

I've never heard anything by Mahler to my knowledge. It may have been used as background music on a TV program, but I've been oblivious if that's the case.

So how do you discover any new music, if not from the recommendations of others? Random selection? Pretty covers? My musical listening scope and enjoyment have been transformed by the "What and Why" thread that you dismiss.

To the best of my knowledge I've never knowingly heard anything by the Grateful Dead. Good or bad?

I'm the same, so I wouldn't know. Not sure I've ever heard any Zappa or Beefheart, either.

I don't need to "discover" new music. There is more than enought yet to be herad in the genres I know I like.

This set me thinking, because one could never quite accurately imagine Bach playing the organ, but at least the Lubeck organ survives ...
In the case of Elgar we have splendid live recordings and splendid studio recordings from the composer himself. I love these, but prefer the performances [live and studio] of Sir Adrian Boult, who, unencumbered by such considerations of how he might have composed the music differently, lets a thoroughly technically controlled but for all that musical free reign to the performances.
For Bach's organ music I suspect that Helmut Walcha give less immediate magic, but a more rounded and complete view of the music than Bach might have [and as Elgar did] of the bones of the matter.
But Bach improvising would be as Michelangelo chipping away at marble. Unrepeatable! Can you imagine David or Moses emerging before one's very eyes!

But within the genre, how do you decide what is the next CD/LP/Download you will buy? Do you listen to random samples? Listen online or to the radio? Buy the new disc from artists you already know? I do all these things, but also just take note of what others recommend. I also get to know over time whose recommendations are likley to fit my tastes.
I don't think I could ever be so self-confident or all-knowing that I would ever consider others' opinions in music irrelevant to me. Maybe that's just me.

For those who have gone through life thus far without the hearing the good Captain ... give it a try - pop music doesn't get much better - it the music Naim made the DAC for exciting, honest and not quite like anything else you've heard. If there is a better vocalist than Don Van Vliet then I'd like to hear him. If the word genius is to be applied to any contemporary musical artist then Don deserves it more than most.
I saw him live when Pink Floyd played Knebworth and, although not at his brilliant best, he was still the highlight of the day for me.

I've read some strange things here over the years, but that one goes right to the top.
