Top Romance Al***s

Posted by: r.wagner on 29 April 2010

I thought it would be interesting to hear peoples' opinions on their favorite romance albums

The start of my list would look like:
1. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
2. Billie Holiday - Jazz 'Round Midnight
3. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
4. The Afghan Whigs - 1965
...

This is the kind of list that would probably change on a daily basis, but I hoping I can get exposed to some new options through this forum.

Thanks,
Bob

Marvin Gaye: Let's Get It On

LOL

It is actually a great album so it wouldn't be a romance album. I'd be too busy listening!

Best opt for some Barry White

Most (all) the girls/ladies I have known would have left if I played most of those. So if it's self "romance" then OK! Winker
Second thoughts I probably would have left if they were playing. Eek

I have always gone with silence , I find music distracting.

When I was wooing the present Mrs BigH, Meatloaf and Rush seemed to work pretty well though.

Oh and an occasional helping of Neil Diamond.

I think the best album for a romantic candle light dinner is "In the court of the crimson king" from King Crimson.

On second thoughts perhaps not!

I can see how 21st Century Schizoid Man would set the scene and what could be more romantic than

Confusion will be my epitaph.
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it we can all sit back and laugh.
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying

How about this.

The most romantic song I can think of is For What is Charteris by Half Man Half Biscuit

One way system – smooth and commendable
Go by bus – they’re highly dependable
The swings in the park for the kids have won awards
The clean streets acknowledged in the Lords
But what’s a park if you can’t see a linnet?
A timetable if your journey’s infinite?
My bag’s packed and I’m leaving in a minute
For what is Chatteris without you in it?

Car crime’s low, the gun crime’s lower
The town hall band CD, it’s a grower
You never hear of folk getting knocked on the bonce
Although there was a drive-by shouting once
But there’s a brass band everywhere
And I don’t drive, so I don’t care
And as a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
What’s Chatteris if you’re not there?

Like a game-bird reserve short on pheasants
Weavers’ cottages devoid of tenants
A market town that lacks quintessence
That’s Chatteris without your presence
Three good butchers, two fine chandlers
An indoor pool and a first class cake shop
Ofsted plaudits, envy of the Fens
Prick barriers at both ends
But what’s Chatteris if you’re not there?

Thanks for current input and the candid remarks.

I found a list that may help stimulate this a bit more.

For romance, it's hard to top Cal Smith's Hello Country Bumpkin:

She said "Hello, country bumpkin"
"How's the frost out on the pumpkin?"
"I've seen some sights but, man, you're somethin'"
"Where'd ya come from, country bumpkin?"

For sure not in the same league, but I like

Eva Cassidy, Songbird
Righteous Brothers, Unchained Melodies
Neil Young, Harvest Moon
Jim Croce
Ed Ames

Sade - Diamond Life

But I made cassettes of favourite 'soppy' songs for my other half. It worked...

Lowell George's masterpiece, Thanks I'll Eat it Here. Was there ever a more romantic track than his version of What Do you Want The Girl To Do ?

And of course as back up there is always the ever fresh, Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs.

Pop singer + Nelson Riddle + American songbook = Great romantic album. This has some nice production values as well.

Etta Jones - great jazz or romance listening.

Max

P.s. "How about Etta, Ella or Nat in general

possibly Doris?
or does the trap door open and I disappear"

Looks good, and someone please check that the trap door is greased for Mudwolf? Poor thing. Big Grin
