Power Supply Advice

Posted by: ian1948uk on 09 September 2003

Hi All
I entered the Naim Domain over the last 2 years acquiring ex-dem and almost new kit along the way to give me a modest starting point. Currently I have a CD3.5, NAP90.3, NAC92, Intro2s and Naca5 cable.
I'm now thinking of buying separate power supplies on a limited budget.
The quick solution seems to be a Flatcap2 (possibly £350 used). I guess I connect one output to the cd but what do I use the other for?
The other option seems to be to buy a single Flatcap1 at about £250 (used) for the cd and then save the same again for a second Flatcap1.
I'd appreciate opinions/advice on what is considered to be the best route. However ther's little chance of me upgrading the cd player so the above seeme to be the arena that I'm in. My musical tastes are varied but centre around the likes of Van Morrison, Robert Plant, John Fahey, Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, and some ambient/chill stuff (Claude Challe etc).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Best regards
Ian

I managed to get a used Flatcap1 for £100 to power my 3.5. For £350 you should be able to find a HiCap which is a much better supply. You will be able to use it way beyond the time you have moved on from the 3.5 & 90 series stuff too, so makes a good long term investment. IMHO anyway Wink

The Hi Cap seems to make best sense a really good step and you will have use of it for many upgrades to come. IMO.

If I remember correctly, the flatcap2 can power 2 components (the pre-amp and the CD3.5). It would form a nice setup and if you want to resell it later it will hold the value better. I have seen some s/h flatcap2 on the market recently. Shop for a second hand flatcap 2 but check with Naim if it can power both the pre-amp and the CD3.5.

Ian.
A Flatcap2 can power both your 3.5 and 92 and will give a good improvement but I agree with the other replies; go for 2 used Hicaps if you can and then stop thinking about upgrading and enjoy your record collection.
