If you liked the first album, you'll more than likely like this new one as well.
I've got both and like them equally as much.

Hullo Nuno,
I think the first album is superb, I think think the second is also very good.
I'm not totally convinced that it is as good as Parachutes but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
Recommend that you buy it or, better still, steal it.

I still prefer Parachutes but the new one is growing on me. I know this is the music room & hi fi talk is a bit taboo..... but, I wish the recording quality of the 2nd
album was as good as the music.

Played it again the other night and it really sounded compressed and lacking dynamics. Friends who were around, and liked parachutes, thought it sounded boring. Try some later Echo & Bunnymen as a comparison (Chris Martin ?) is alledgedly a big fan, E&B is far more engaging, IMHO.

The initial singalong friendliness has worn off and I reckon it will be one of those rarely dug out in years to come. The lyrics are just too anodyne and passionless.
Never heard Parachutes-isn't it even more 'muzak'?

The sonic and musical signature of both albums is very similar. Parachutes was one of the few albums that I managed to play through the 552 and this was captivating, thrilling, dynamic and compulsive listening. Even through a mere 52 it never fails to grip my attention. Coldplay is the band that deserves the following and press idolatory that has been unfortunately been bestowed on the far less talented Radiohead.

I actually bought the second one first. I liked it very much, so I bought "Parachutes" on a whim. After a while I discovered that I was listening to the first much more than the second. I think "Rush..." is very good, but it has a few weak spots. "Parachutes" doesn't seem to have that flaw.

Crap recording/production, though.

I agree with most of you here, 90% of it is dull and the sound is crap. I feel cheated. Avoid.

Hold on a moment,
this backlash is a bit of an overreaction isn't it ?
You can argue the toss whether it's better or worse than Parachutes, but you can't really call it a dog ?
At least some of the tracks are equal to those on Parachutes in my humble.
The first time I played "Rush of Blood" I was rather underwhelmed, which was confusing as it had apparently been well received. The more times I play it however, the better it becomes.
Give it a fighting chance, it's The Second Album FFS.

Not a dog as such but it is being hyped as the 'next best thing' by many. What struck me is that it is pretty derivative, in places U2 could almost sue them for copyright.

"in places U2 could almost sue them for copyright"
And you can't get much more damming than that really.
"Try some later Echo & Bunnymen as a comparison (Chris Martin ?) is alledgedly a big fan, E&B is far more engaging, IMHO"
The Bunnymen got some lifetime achievment gong at the Q Music awards they publicly thanked Coldplay for some apparent role in a Bunnymen revival or something (I wasn't really paying attention). There certainly seemed to be some kind of friendship there.
Not sure why you say "later Echo & The Bunnymen" but I would agree that one listen to "Crocodiles" makes Coldplay's position in the grand scheme of things very obvious.
As for Coldplay -- I haven't heard the new album and never bought "Parachutes" as I got bored of it after hearing it more or less everywhere I went for 6 months and almost without fail evertime I had the misfortune of findng myself at some boring middle-class dinner party type event (As my friends have all turned 30 this is now deemed to be something we should enjoy). They are obviously quite talented but I am left distinctly underwhelmed and wondering why they bother.
My mate went to see them on Saturday at Wembley Arena on a corporate freebie complete with champagne reception and canapes. A Coldplay gig seems to have become much like a trip to "Twickers".

The songs that worked best on Parachutes were the ones with simple arrangements (mainly voice and THAT piano). I don't think that the big sound suits them.
I'd agree that the Bunnymen do the BIG sound much better, but then they always did it better than anyone. Their early work, boosted by Mac's swagger and the overdubbed acoustic guitars and strings was brilliant. The newer stuff (Evergreen onwards) is ok but not a patch on Crocodiles, Ocean Rain and Heaven Up Here, and is obviously the work of a more mature (middle aged!) but less inspired band.
Who needs another U2? (For what its worth, I think that U2 were good in the early days before they discovered Stadium Rock, but then I would say that wouldn't I)

Just got the "Rush..to.. head" thing on vinyl.
It sounds pretty damn good to me.
Either some people haven't got their system set up correct or they should ditch their crap cd player and buy a deck.

The CD is severely bandwidth limited and raw, on my main system. Through a friend's 552 it is unlistenable.
Through my el-cheapo 'study' system it sounds fine.
I'll try to get it on the rotating big black thing, as I really like the music.

Sounds ok, bot a coldplay fan but on first listen it didn't do it for me. On the other hand it's great to see a new release on Vinyl and from the CD reports this is propbly the best way to here it.
To err is human; to really foul it up requires a computer.

Nuno,
I don't know if you're taking the piss out of everyone here, but I like you. You make me laugh.
The quality of the second one is on par with the first. I prefer the second's musical content, but that's just my opinion.
There were some suggestions on this forum that the cd sounded bad, but they should have supported the vinyl trade in the first place.

The vinyl sounds bad as well. Difficult to put a finger on it, but just flat and dull. Although I perfer the songs to the first one.
