Arcade Fire - Funeral

Ok - I'm sure somebody will tell me that there was a thread about this album about six months ago. Nevertheless it is an absolute jem.

This Canadian outfit deliver music which has an emotion and energy far to absent from much of todays music. Imagine a punk/folk band being fronted by David Bryne and singing the most infectious songs then that might give you an idea of their sound.

I have only had this album a week and it is continually fighting for air time next to Kate Bush's new one.

Two of my favourite albums of the year all in one week - nice. Smile

It is a very good album, but for me I find the singers voice a bit grating. In many ways it reminds me of Television - Marquee Moon but without the virtuoso dueling guitars.

Bought Funeral at the beginning of the year after reading good reviews, now it's album of the year. I've not played it much but keep doing so after I read yet another article about how good they are. But it leaves me cold and does nothing at all. Whereas Sufjin Stevens - Illinois is masterful, ditto Laura Veirs - Year of Meteors both not a million miles away from AF.
So what'sup with me?

Funeral is well worth persisting with. A lot of people have mentioned that the vocalists voice is an acquired taste. Actually his voice seems to change substantially from track to track. All in all it is a fair old rousing romp. I bought it a few months ago and continue to enjoy it.

However, it always depends on what your cup of tea is - so to speak. Smile

Sister Ray just emailed me their top 30 albums for 2005 and Funeral was no 1

I'll have to get it now.
