Hi All, the new album out in May can be heard in its entirety on the official website. Sounds really fantatstic but does she ever release a bad record?

Nice steer. I'm off to have a listen now. I only have her soundtrack to Magnolia and I love it. I need some educating with regard to her other albums.

OK, here goes. It is perhaps best to treat Magnolia as a best of as most of songs are from other albums. The best two are 'Bachelor No. 2' and 'Lost in Space' which was her last release. The good news is that both of these are available mid price, and if you have a 'Fop' near by they can picked up for £5. Bachelor No 2 is an all time classic and in my opinion is right up there with the very best music ever recorded - trust me it is that good! Lyrically these albums are as sharp as ever, she sings beautifully and is still a bit of fox. What's not to like? 'I'm with stupid' and 'Whatever' are also very fine records.

'Bachelor No 2' is a real gem, I found 'Lost In Space' (the last album) a bit drab and uninspired so I'll be interested in the new one's progress. 'Whatever' sounds a little dated but is my other favourite. It is a little rockier.
Woodface-can you post a link to the website. I heard a snippet via iTunes but not enough to get excited about!

Her husband Michael Penn is no slouch either. Check out Resigned. One of my favorite pop albums out there.

My opinion only, but Lost In Space seemed like a less-inspired take on Bachelor No. 2. am looking forward to hearing the new one, but purchase of same is no longer automatic. IMHO her best ones are No.2 and Whatever. I miss Jon Brions' creative way with production on her records; you need a bit of colour when the basic material tends towards the lyrically downbeat. I must stress though, a "bad" Aimee Mann album is superior to 95% of pop releases to-day, so my judgements are only relative. Her work, along with XTC, Crowded House, Martin Newell, Nick Heyward etc., got me through the 90's.
BTW, saw her husband (Michael Penn) at a small club gig here a few weeks ago; he was great, and will be releasing an album later this year. What a talented couple!

Do you know what the dates are, they don't seem to be on the website.

Thanks, woodface. I've just listened to the album via her site, but I'm not that excited by it. I do like "B#2" and I love "Whatever", but "I'm With Stupid" and this new one leave me a bit cold.
She's obviously extremely talented, but I would agree with bhazen that she needs a strong producer and a backing band who have more passion and less of a "session musician" sound, otherwise it's too flat.
The album artwork is really suberb though.

Her albums with Til Tuesday aren't bad - not sure what's available on CD as I have old vinyl, but there must be a greatest hits I should think.

Hi Brian, I have only had an initial listen yesterday and it is not as good as Bachelor no 2 (but little is)but I feel it's a grower. I was not too keen on 'lost in space' at first where as now it is a real favourite. Overall anything Aimee Mann does is better than 99% of what is out there.

Check out "Everything's Different Now" by Til Tuesday. Especially the the amazing "J for Jules".
Like the others say though, "Bachelor #2" is rather hot too.
