Troika Cleaning

Posted by: Chris Bell on 09 February 2002

Anyone had success cleaning the stylus on a Troika? Is there any recommended proceedure or product out there? There are so many cleaning products available and I don't want to damage my cartridge experimenting.

Thanks in advance,

Chris Bell

There are only three ways that i know of to properly clean a Troika,(or an Arkiv etc etc)

By carefully stroking the stylus from the back towards the front with that GREEN STUFF supplied by Linn. I also 'lean' the green stuff slightly to each alternate side to clean the sides of the stylus.

By carefully stroking the stylus from the back towards the front with a piece of very fine emery paper or the striking stip off a matchbox, if you haven't got any of that green stuff supplied by Linn

By using the Audia Technica electronic stylus cleanning brush for AT LEAST 10 MINUTES without the liquid

How do you remove the visible gunk from the delicate bits? Down by the coils etc?

I'd like to drop it into a bath of something.

I own a slightly bent Arkiv with visible dirt.

(The question is, what to do with it? Is UKP700 a good deal? I bid UKP50 on a good looking K18 on EBay last week, it went for UKP72. This is silly money.... I have a worn out Goldring 1040 and I want to get back into 1000 lps. There should be an obvious solution for a Lingo/LP12/Ekos. It's actually looking like UKP700 at the moment....)

i've used the same method since 1990 on my troika. its been to linn once for 'redo'in 2000 (past due btw) and was still singing until a recent cat attack.

BTW, I now have a Linn rebuilt Troika and still use the ES compound.

Don't:

1) Use Linn Green Paper
2) Use a vibrating stylus cleaner
3) Use anything like Sty-last or other gunk
4) Use a demagnetiser

Do:

1) Using a squirrel/camel hair paint brush, get rid of excess fluff
2) Get some isopropyl alcohol and once every so often (in my case one a month) gently clean the tip
3) Get some putty or blu tack and clean th ewhole lot under a microscope

Dev,

What do you use to apply the alcohol?

With Linn MCs I have used both the green diamond polishing paper provided by Linn and vibrating brushes. I also use a soft brush for removing fluff. I have never had a problem in over 20 years of different Linn cartridges although I cannot remember exactly when I started using the green stuff. I did try alcohol at one point (years ago) but I was warned about the alcohol destroying the inner rubber bits so stopped. I also tried several commercially available liquid stylus cleaners all of which made the situation worse and affected the sound to boot.

However, these observations are with Linn MCs only. I cannot vouch for others. I seem to remember that someone said that Dynavector does not recommend either green paper or vibrating brushes. Didn't someone report (was it Vuk?) that their stylus fell off a Dynavector while cleaning. Perhaps they are glued on unlike the Linn MCs.

Use a fine paint brush, dip the end in the alcohol and just brush against the tip. Do not use on the cantilever or it will travel up as others have described.

Hope this helps

How often do you sit there with a blob of blu-tack and a microscope?

Alex

PS Am I barred from future Saturday romps?
