Donald Fagan - Morph the Cat

Posted by: Brucie on 22 March 2006

Has anyone got this? I have The Nightfly which I think is superb and was just wondering what this more recent release is like.

I hear DF is very particular about recording/pressing quality of his music.

"Hoffman and Gray cut from the 15-inches-per-second, half-inch analog tape. "The reason it was done at 15," Hoffman said, "was to preserve the tremendous bass response." And the bass response on this record is just that - TREMENDOUS!"

Simon,

It is a double album. ( 2 LPs )

I haven't ordered anything from Acoustic Sound, since I usually order through Music Direct

I haven't had any problems over the years from them. They ship stuff overseas. ( unfortunately, shipping will not be cheap, however )

Kuma

Cheers for that. Fifty two minutes spread over two lovely slabs of 180g vinyl. This REALLY has to be purchased!!!!

Jesus Kuma - you are not kidding. 23 bloody dollars to ship one album. That makes it 52 bucks total - ouch!

I'd buy the vinyl for certain if I liked the album that much, but even being a very long-time Dan fan (Fagan's solo efforts to a lesser degree), I'm having a hard time getting all the way through this CD. Can't put my finger on the reason.
The recording is amazing in places, especially the bass guitar. Being a bass player it is gratifying to hear how much trouble they went to in order to have such a deep and clean sound.
Maybe it will grow on me. If so, I'll have the vinyl for sure. Those deep bass sounds will give my LP12 some exercise!

I do quite like morph, but as I already have it on cd, £40 for the vinyl is too rich for my blood. I will keep a look-out for it at a more sensible price though.

....Ok so I admit it I love SACD/DVD-A (sorry purists) I especially love the 5.1 SD/Fagen stuff - but I've had a strange problem with the DVD-A version of Morph

..the graphics show up on the TV and give me 2 choices ...surround + stereo but no sound is heard (although it does play on my PC!) and yes I've tripled checked everything)

Another copy of Morph I "received" (don't ask) has 3 choices DTS, surround, and stereo this plays all modes fine ....anyone else had this problem or have I simply got a duff DVD?

My less than stellar post made me give it another listen.
OK, now it's growing on me.
Go figure.

Nothing to figure. It's a slow burner, gradually revealing itself to be the best thing Don has done in quite some time.
Morph, H-gang and It's what I do, three killer opening cuts.

Whilst this isn't Morph the Cat related - it is Steely Dan related.
Apart from dodgy old vinyl on ebay does anyone know where I can get a copy of Zazu by Rosie Vela ? for some reason it popped into my head a few days ago and I don't have a copy. I believe it was produced by one(or both) of the Dans and they both play on it at some point.

Cheers,
Alan

Zazu was wonderful and I still have the vinyl in the loft. The Lp is available here as well as numerous other bits.

Produced by both Becker and Fagen if I recall.

....Re Rosie Vela ..I had a ticket to see her in concert as part of a UK tour...the tour was subsequently cancelled and she never toured the UK again ..not sure if she ever toured anywhere?!

Previously .....In the halcyon days of the Dan I was turning up on a daily basis (1974) at the Newcastle City Hall awaiting the tickets to be delivered for the forthcoming tour date ....Donald copped a throat infection and the rest of the tour (inc Newcastle) was cancelled ...they never played again until the 2 against Nature tour 19 yrs later!

DOH!!!!!!

(seen them twice since in London and Glasgow though)

Just googled this from "Magic Smile" the Rosie Vela website (!)...

Aside from singing two songs (and starring) in the film "Inside Edge" and participating in a few songs on movie soundtracks, Rosie has not released any of her own music for over a decade. She completed a second album, but it never saw the light of day because of an unsympathetic record company. In the '90s, Rosie began working on a third album of music, but it's completion has been postponed because of her participation in musical activities with Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO).

Today, Rosie resides in Los Angeles, California, with her dogs, and she has resumed modeling on an occasional basis. Most recently, Rosie sang backups on ELO's 2001 album, "Zoom," and performed as a member of ELO during their first concerts in 15 years.

To read a fact-filled, insightful Rosie Vela interview, check out the May 1994 issue of the now-defunct Steely Dan fan magazine Metal Leg. This article, by Eric Pooley, is republished from the November 3, 1986, issue of New York Magazine.

Nightfly is THE used reference of all
hifi demos since decades.
imo the sound quality of kamakiriad or gaucho
or aja is better.
All those three are soundwise behind arizona dreams
or blue eye of yello.
i rate Nightfly high, because it is "music"
and not only an unintresting "hifi-sound-demo
thing"

Have not heared morph until now, will do it soon
and think :does not matter how "bad" it will
sound orthe music will be,as we discuss it here
on the forum with so many comennts it does NOT
give me the impression that it is an nonimportant piece of new music in the world of today.
