You must choose ONE of these three and say WHY...

Posted by: Consciousmess on 15 November 2008

As the title suggests, I will give you a list of 3 options and you must say which one you'd choose and why. After there have been 20 replies, I will debrief and give you my aims and hypothesis.....

1) Pull a cats tail
2) Put a lighter to a dolphin's fin
3) Slaughter a chicken with your bare hands

(I am not being sick or twisted, I just have a hypothesis I wish to test!!)

I look forward to your replies, and please follow the instructions in the first paragraph!!

Difficult to see the compulsion.

Put a lighter to a dolphin's fin, because the lighter would do no harm if not alight.

Mmmmmm.....dolphin steaks. It would take a while to bake it with a lighter, though.

1) pull a cat's tail (with shame and regret).

The chicken.

Done it before, and no doubt would do it again if I had a house in the country.

A tip for feathering is to firstly pluck the bird, and then get a saucer of metholated spirits, alight, and use this to tidy up the tiny little new feathers which are impossible to pluck by hand.

Sunday lunch.

Hey Jon,

Was your hypothesis that the forum members will be sarcastic and facetious when confronted with requests such as this? Oh, and that we would just drift off-topic?

Confirmed. Smile

Yes. Always used to do half a dozen at a time.

Wrung their necks. Someone has to!

3) As a kid we always kept chickens (and the odd goose) and I have on many occations pulled a chicken's neck and plucked it for the dinner table, probably more humane than the one you buy from Tesco.

Dear Gary,

In my view this assessment is completely correct. The industrialisation of butchery is not edifying, and home slaughter is now virtually illegal under EU rules, but certainly was much the best way of doing things, whether it be the pig that ate the scraps, or poultry kept specifically for the purpose.

In the old days we would get our local butcher in to slaughter a lamb each year, and it was not a desperately sad affair.

Game is most often dealt with away from the industrial process as well.

I suspect that given the stark choice of eating meat, or not, after killing the animal first there would be many more vegitarians than currently. Buying filleted chicken breasts from a supermarket really is divorced from the reality of the life of a bird that ends in industrialised slaughter. Most children apparently have no idea where milk comes from, or the very demanding life that milking cows really is, and there, by extension, the inevitable end of the milking cows. And even vegitarians pass over the fact that every milking cow will be eventually slaughtered, when they buy milk, butter, or cheese, but baulk at buying meat. This is a profound disconnect that I always put to vegitarians when they insist on feeding me a vegitarian meal and then offer me milk in tea or coffee, or cheese with bread or buiscuits. [But not if they refrain from offering dairy produce].

Perhaps those who are vegitarian on moral grounds should refrain from eating any diary produce as the result of their demand for it leads just as inevitably as that from meat eaters to the inductrial slaughter of animals ...

Given that choice, myself, I would continue to eat meat ...

I would put a lighter to a Dolphin's fin. My reason is that he could quickly dive back in the water and be minimally hurt.

1. Pull a cat's tail because I have done it before and it's relatively harmless although a bit of an annoyance to the cat.

I wouldn't do 2 because it is just torture.

I don't really have a problem with 3 if it is for food but as long as there is someone else to do it I'll leave it thanks.

No.3
It is the only one that serves a useful purpose. I eat meat, I should be prepared to kill the source.
