...is there a way of stopping the annoying little box telling me I have automatic updates turned off (without turning them to on!) every time I start up?

Yes: unplug the computer, pick it up and hurl it out of the window into the nearest skip then buy a Mac... or if you can't bear to part with your machine, install Linux...

Hi RoyleBlue,
All you need to do is open the 'security center' from within the control panel. On the left hand side there should be a box called 'Resources', click on the last item 'Change the way Security Center alerts me' and uncheck the box for Automatic Updates.
Hope that works!

To be fair Top Cat apple used to have something equally annoying.
In the software update is you set something to ignore, when it did a check it would still open software update to inofmr you there were no new updates but there was stuff on your ignore list!
Thankfully they ditched that, now we just have the uber annoying 'the download contains an application' on everything I download, doh!
