Borrowed a CD5 from a dealer....

....and only managed to get something to eat at 11pm

Out of interest I've borrowed a CD5 which I've got for a week. It's been plugged into my lowly Nait2 so I can have a play.

Now, I've just come across a horrific discovery, going to have to spend some more money at some point, bugger.

For a start I've always liked the way CDs sounded through my Pioneer DVD player on the Nait2, I was aghast at the difference whilst playing them through an AV2 (In stereo mode), now I've heard the CD5 plugged into the Nait2.

I would have used the term "F... me", but bloody hell will suffice, don't want to get myself banned now. I'm astounded at the difference, things I've never noticed before, a separation in the sound I never knew existed. I also never knew that my Nait could fill my living room to such an extent at so low levels (around 10 o'clock) or for that my little Royd Audio speakers could do the same. Just to feel the thumps of drums and the tone of a cello. After owning the same system for 13 years and 3 months (came across my original invoice from Graham's last week), I thought I had heard everything it could do, after so many years, I'm just absolutely astounded.

So all I need to do now is think about this a bit more and wait a couple of months as I haven't quite paid off the final parts of my credit card bill for the last Naim spending spree yet, got another 3 weeks to pay it off until Visa start charging me interest Smile

Of course later on will be the 112/150 purchase, but I'm not going to demo that yet considering I only borrowed the CD5 "out of interest", once bitten, twice shy as the saying goes.

Another case of source first at work. Wink

Some of my friends are skeptical of the importance of having of good source. They listened to good source setups at the showrooms and think their home budget ones isn't far off. But I feel really one needs to have lived with the component for a while to really realise what they had been missing. Unfortunately, home trials are not really the norm in my part of the world, so most of them are still "kept in the dark" of the immense musical pleasures by having a very good source.

Wait till you hear a cdx... any chance of you getting your hands on a used cdx?

A very good point, Leeto. I guess somebody who knows all this psygollygee lark could explain how the rationalisation process works in such situations.

And of course in the mean time we all sound like source-first 'dogmaniacs' to the subjects.

In the part of the world where Leeto and I come from, its nearly always "speakers first", then choose an amp to drive it. As for the source, just find one which could fit into the remaining budget.
Not always, but close enough.

Haha, after discovering what a CD5 sounds like and seeing what people have said about other Naim players I think I'll skip that suggestion on the basis that my finances won't take it.

What I haven't heard I can't attempt to buy Smile

Hi all!

Allthough I like my CD5 extremely well, I'll stick to the "speakers first" theory.
