Are Naim mains leads directional?
Posted by: PS on 28 April 2005
....anyone heard about Naim mains leads being directional (i.e. earth on top within the plug)?....
....or is my dealer who is currently changing all my leads over f.o.c. just trying to win favour so that I do not 'go to tender' for alternate pricing on my next Naim purchase/upgrade....
....sounds an odd one to me....just don't like being conned....
....perhaps Naim can clarify.

I think you rang me and I hadn't a clue what you were talking about.
What does "earth on top within the plug" mean?

Oh Yes they are
The three pin section attaches to the wall, and the little black socket attaches to the back of the Naim device.
If you get it round the other way it just sounds awful!
I'm sorry but I couldn't resist...

Yes. You should always use them with the power running from right to left, unless, of course, your system is against a NW to SE alligned wall and within 6.28km of a TV mast of a height greater than 74.43m. In this case it should run from left to right.

And you're all happy to accept that your NAC A5 is directional (coz it says so on the cable).
Why can't mains cable be directional as well?
Or.......... it's bollocks for both!
John.

directional?, now there is a difficult one.
as we say here in Ireland when asked for directions
"well I certainly wouldn't start from here"

The unterminated cable possibly is (or at least I would assume so based on the spur wiring instructions I was sent a copy of). One has to hope that if the cable was directional, Naim managed to get the leads manufactured with it the right way round.

Yes, it is directional.
It lets the foward power in and the reflected power out.

I don't understand how mains cable can be directional, as the mains signal is (supposed to be) a 50 Hz sine wave that flows forwards and backwards alternating.
One of the first things the electrical equipment does is to rectify it, before smooting it out to DC.
I think the only reasons for running it in one direction are (a) the people/machines who make up the wires always do it in the same direction, (b) so the writing on the side of the cable matches up.

....blimey some conversation whilst I slept.
....Adam, I had to seek clarification from my dealer as well as to why he was changing all my mains leads. It means, when you open up the crabtree plug, the earth lead is on top (not underneath) which shows the direction of the mains lead....and aparently 'earth on top' is the direction of choice recommended by Naim for best sound quality....so my dealer is telling me!!!!
Maybe it doesn't sound so daft as a consumer when you consider that case fuses sound better 'kite mark upwards'.
My main concern here is that I do not like being strung along if this is not a genuine Naim recommendation....
yours gullably....

....but then I am about to order a Fraim from someone so I could see a motive in such activity if I was cynical....

PS,
If by directionnal you mean Phase / neutral / earth, the cable are not really but the boxes are definitly ("if you revert the plug it sound awfull" :-))
Now the points are: which one is the good direction, and does all black boxes have the same one ??
