Phono Stages

Posted by: NB on 05 April 2003

I am in the process of purchasing a new 252 pre amp which I beleive does not come with an input for phono's.

My turntable is a Roksan Xerxes/Artemiz/Shiraz and I was wondering what is going to be the best match for the 252 pre-amp?

Any ideas where I should start looking?

Regards

NB,

simplest is the Stageline, which can be powered directly from the 252.

I'm not sure if a Prefix can be fitted to your Roksan.

Why don't Naim make a phono stage for those of us who don't happen to own LP12s, but who want something better than a Stageline?

I know about the benefits of having the electronics very close to the TT, but would it be so tough to slightly tweak the Prefix for more gain and stick it in a little box?

Ho hum

Tim,

Stageline & Prefix have the same gain. It's not about the gain...

BTW, the prefix IS ALREADY in a box, it's just one that's designed to be fixed inside a record deck.

I'm clearly showing my ignorance here, but I thought part of the point of the Prefix was that the cabling between it and the deck was kept as short as possible, improving the signal by getting it up to line level ASAP.

I'm guessing that if you want to build a really good phono stage which is specifically designed to have a lot more cabling between it and the arm, it might have to be tweaked a bit to take that into account.

Thanks for the pic. I know the Prefix is in a box desinged to be mounted in a deck - but sadly not my deck, or anyone else who doesn't own an LP12.

Cheers.

Tim,

the arm is intended to be connected via the short green/white/red bundle of wires on the left side.

Is there anywhere within or under the Xerxes that the prefix could be fitted?

cheers, Martin

Hi,
re The Prefix picture:
if I understand right, the grey cable on the right is a Snaic (means modulation+power supply)?

If one want to use a Hicap or Super cap to power its Prefix, then modulation connection is done through the PSU?

Thanks

I am not sure how much room there is under the Xerxes or if a prefix can be fitted to one?

What do other Xerxes owners use to conect their decks to a Naim?

I also recently purchased a 252 so had to go separate Phono Stage. Bought a Tom Evans Groove - the best upgrade I ever made!

Jean-Marc,

yes, the grey cable is a SNAIC.

If running with a Hi- or Super-Cap, then a special cable is reqd to take the output from the Cap to the preamp.

I would heartly second Peter's recommendation of The Groove.

It will probably be good enough to sit with the 552 in the future.

It is also configurable by Tom for different cartridge loading etc. and (obvioulsy)sits outside the deck.

David/Peter -

Are your Grooves connected so that cabling between the box and the arm is kept to a minimum? Or was that not a consideration?

How are they connected to your preamp? Is it just a phono to din cable?

As I understand it, Naim use essentially the same circuit design in all flavours of moving coil phono stage - internal boards, Stageline and Prefix.

Other than the fact that the arm lead is eliminated with the Prefix, I really can't see how the Prefix can offer better performance than the Stageline. I've read in another thread that the most likely explanation for the higher price of the Prefix is to cover the extra time a dealer must spend in fitting it to a turntable.

Of course, I could just be talking out of my arse...

Phono Lead (Silver) from LP12 goes into the back of the Tom Evans. I then use a Chord Anthem Lead from pair of phono outputs on back of Tom Evans to Tuner input on 252 via Phono/Din adapter. This was the opimum connection recommended by Audio-T at Reading. They should know as every sales person there has a Groove!

My setup is in my public profile, but in short

Lingo LP12 / Weekes Lingo / Arkiv B / Ekos arm lead terminated in bncs - The Groove - phono - Chord Anthem - DIN - 52 input 2

I run the earth lead from the Ekos straight to the 52, star earthing and all that.
