Stageline vs. Internal Phono Board

Posted by: Number 5 on 14 March 2003

Why would one consider the use of an external Stageline over the phono boards that can be "plugged" inside a preamp like the 102, 82 or 52. What is the difference? Is one better?

Thanks

Well, the plug-in boards can be problematic by the very nature of the fact that they plug in. There are also the issues related to powersupplies.

Many have experienced improvements by removing plug-ins. Even more testify to the wonders of a stageline with an outboard supply. (I use a stageline K w a Hi cap).

The Prefix notwithstanding, I have yet to hear from anyone, dealers included, who did not agree that a stageline w/psu outperforms the internal boards. There is the issue of RF, and in some areas I guess stages are unusable.

Still, my stage/hi is pretty darn good. I also have heard of the stage being driven w/ a super.

So, conventional wisdom seems to say the removal of internal boards and better psu's makes for a better vinly experience.
