52PS
Posted by: graphoman on 12 October 2002
Please give me information, advice, empathy etc.
What’s the 52PS, how old a model is it, what’s the difference between it and the Supercap? How much should it cost S/H? Can it support (temporarily) a 72?
I offered a dealer a 15-year-old set of 32.5/Hi/250 and told him I wanna get a Scap. He told me the value this set represent was max. EU 1200 and he offered the 52PS for (my set+1300).
Any opinion on it? Any better idea? Many thanks in advance

I would wait for a Supercap.
I think that the 52PS was unique to the early 52 preamps so would probably be 10 to 15 years old. I believe that Naim can modify them to Supercap status but I don't know how much this costs. Unmodified, I think it can only be used with an old 52 preamp, but others will no doubt correct me on this if I am wrong.
In the UK, I would guess that a 15 year old 32.5/Hicap/250 would fetch about £900-£1100. A 5/10 year old Supercap would probably cost £1250-£1500 privately.
Hope this helps
Cheers

The 52 (and therefore the 52PS) was introduced in 1990.
SuperCap replaced the 52PS in 1995.
I reckon your amps are worth at least as much as a 52PS. A Supercap is definately worth more than a 52PS.

thank you, it was my suspicion from start that the 52PS was hardly a greater value then my set.

Naim did the 52PS to Supercap for me in 97 for £950

it may contradict Naim’s logic but if it’s not possible to swap the old set for a better PS then I may stick to the 250 and go for active. Actually, I did not want to go that way but I got an offer, I could have a 2-4 SNAXO for the 32.5... where I’ll have to rebuild the 250 by Naim... and at the end I should start wondering how to get a second HiCap to feed the crossover... Life is complicated, life of an audiphile is even more so.

I got the 52ps from Gene Rubin. Paid only 600$, less than a s/h hicap. I then traded my 82- 2 hc for a 52 head unit. Great, great upgrade for only a couple of dollar.
