Holiday Advice Yorkshire Dales
Posted by: Sloop John B on 21 March 2006
Hi all,
We (2 adults, 3 children between 8 and 12) are holidaying in England again this year.
Going Dublin to Holyhead on the ferry and will eventually spend a week with rellies in Scunthorpe and would like to spend some time (we think) in the Yorkshire Dales.
I'd like any advice anyone may have about accommodation. Preferably I would like self catering of a high standard. I'd like a safe place that if the kids were wandering about I would have no fear of humans or machines. Or if anyone knows of something not dreamed of in my philosophy!
I have tried the tourist board who sent me to their websites, but there is nothing as good as a personal knowledge or recommendation.
Thanks
John

We have booked a few times throughout the UK through welcome cottages ( http://www.welcomecottages.com )and they ahve always been of a high standard for £350-£550 pw depending on when you go
We prefer Wensleydale (Leyburn/Aysgarth/Hawes as it is more off the beaten track or even better Swaledale (Reeth, Muker)
One we have been to 6-7 times and really can recommend is in Harmby (Lower Wensleydale) with views of Middleham and is set in well over and acre of grounds ideal for kids. They now take bookings direct by contacting the owner Alan who lives nextdoor and can be contacted on 01969 623495

John,
I would be hard pressed to better the areas recomended by Bosh, all wonderful parts of the country unless you are subjected to a week of rain or worse still a week's worth of rain in three days! If it stays dry have you considered a day or half day trip to Malham, Malham Tarn and Gordale Scar? I think these being a short walk from a car park should not be too tiring for your kiddies and the sight of the towering limestone clifs should keep them quiet for the journey back to the cottage.

The 'Dales' are a huge area, from the limestone areas around Malham/Ingleton/Grassington up to the slightly bleaker areas around Leyburn/Swaledale. I live a few miles form Malham so obviously know this area well.
Around here are quite a lot af attractions for the kids in terms of things like Skipton Castle, Ingleton Cave/White Scar Cave, Ingleton falls and the spectacular Malham Cove/Tarn and Goredale Scar. There is also a Falconry Centre near Clapham. These are just a few of the possibles for a wet day, or if your kids want to 'do' something rather than just enjoy the countryside. The villages are great for a quiet life and you should get a good choice of properties around here. English Country Cottages are generally a reliably good standrad.
Hard to advise a specific property, as we do not rent any ourselves! However our neighbour has almost finished converting a clutch of cottages which will be available this Summer-however they are not quite finished yet though. The house has already been converted to a B+B to a high standrad so I expect the same will be true of the cottages.
If you are interested in this part of the Dales (which is rather further from Scunthorpe than Leyburn etc) let me know and I'll post the details. The cottages are around a converted farm and you would have acres of country with no traffic. You would also be adjacent to the Leeds Liverpool canal.
The Dales look beuatiful this morning, the tops still sprinkled with snow, frost in the fields and the first lambs skittering about!

I did a long post about the Dales but it has been referred to the administrator with a 'trigger word'! No idea what I may have siad but just to let you know some more information is coming. I hope it will be cleared for publication soon!

Thanks Bruce,
Likewise my original post was quarantined until a moderator could assess it's suitability.
I'm intrigued as to what words could be so potentially divisive.

The ex steeltown in North Lincolnshire does tend to trigger the censor flags.

Thanks for the replies,
took my wife to point out the expeltive in the middle of "Sunny Scunnie"
Bosh, I can't seem to find the cottage you mention on the website, can you point out a link for me please? I forgot to mention that 2 of my chidren have asthma so we will need a cottage that does not accept pets, do you know if that's the case here?
Bruce, I'd be very interested in your neighbours cottages if they would be available around 10th March for 7-10 days and would appreciate more information if that's the case.

The best and most interesting holiday rental properties in the UK are those from the Landmark Trust IMHO.

Details and contact email are here.
I'm sure they will be getting them ready for this summer season but they are not finished yet so if I mail you a photo it will look a bit like a building site! They are adjacant to the large house in the photo. The two cottages shown on the website are a few miles away in Carleton-fine but not as peaceful as our corner.
If you look on the map you'll see we are in the south western corner of the Dales, about 15mins from Malham.
Email me if you want to know any more.
