Cartridge degaussing; myth or magic

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 08 November 2002

Don't understand the theory; how can copper/silver coils become magnetised?
Isn't there a danger of weakening the permanent magnet?
Does it really work?
Which is the best machine?

Doc,

Don't do it. Very bad.

When people talk about degaussing a cartridge they are ONLY talking about doing it with a moving coil cartridge, NEVER a moving magnet.

Markus,

Van den hul advises against fluxbusting MC cartridges, too. Here's the link (scroll to bottom of page, under the "remark" header).

Hi Malcolm:

I use the Cardas record from time to time. As it's an actual LP there's no chance of it making a meal of your cartridge.

As to whether it works, I think it does. My system (cartridge is an XV-1) sounds a little 'tighter' afterwards. Cardas claims that it works the whole system but that would be a difficult proposal to test.

An old cartridge that it worked miracles with was an AT OC9 which hadn't had the treatment for about 18 months. The improvement there was very obvious.

Best Regards,

Thanks for the VDH link Joe

Some good stuff in there (mostly informative but some just plain hilarious)

that Van den Hul link was really interesting, particularly the stuff about using impedance loading to alter the sound. I have been doing this for a while, but had not seen any theory before. thanks
