I got this a a couple of days ago. It doesn't seem to say 'this is brilliant' straight away, but I suspect it will grow on me.

Martin,
Bought it 2 days ago and it's had about 6 spins.I'm impressed,I really do like this type of acoustic music.
I came late to R.T. and have bought 3 other CD's in the past 2 yesrs.

I'll look out for your review.

How does this compare with his early work with Fairport and solo albums like "Bright Lights Tonight". Haven't bought any RT for ages and think I may be missing out. Very interested to read your review.

I'd be interested in a range of opinions on this one. I switched off RT around Mock Tudor as it was just becoming so predictable and even the live performances were getting a little pickled in aspic so to speak.

The latest album seems to have had his most favourable reviews for some time but I am suspicious. There seems to be a tendency to buy into the perspective (pushed by RT it has to be said) that he is a better cultural commentator and observer by locating in the alleged cultural oasis of L.A. My perspective leans toward the more realistic possibility that he is just distanced from both Albion and L.A. and not in a position to have anything to say of any significance on either.

I'd be interested to see the range of views on this album.

A smidgeon harsh, Mike. I still rate his live gigs as among the best gigs one can see. His last few albums have been great. I haven't heard FPB yet ('xcept one track on the Word cover cd) but I will buy it on both cd and vinyl as I have done for the previous two albums. Then again, I'm too much of a fan to be impartial in this.

I'm waiting for my copy of FPB to arrive.

RT is much underrated, and seemingly few appreciate his songwriting and unique guitar style.

With 'Fairport' he introduced a style of electric guitar. never before used in folk music. The fatal road crash during his time with Fairport, when he lost close friends, generated some pretty dark songs. I think we still sometimes hear echoes of that terrible experience in his music. Notably, those wonderfully dark songs of love gone wrong.

I would urge the unfamiliar in the direction of 'Rumor (sic) and Sigh' as a primer.

Hmmm Richard Thompson... Anyone heard Teddy Thompson?

Very good... A combination of Richard and Linda with a little more commercial appeal...
