Rega Ela MkI

Posted by: jayd on 13 December 2002

I just scored a pair of the abovementioned speakers for the seemingly laughable price of $212.50.

I love eBay.

However, I admit I've never heard Elas of any Mk before. Can any of you Ela owners tell me just what I've purchased? Any idea how sensitive they are, etc.?

My system comprises Rega Planet, Nait 3, NACA5.

Thanks. I'll give a full accounting and a comparison with my Meadowlark Kestrels as soon as I receive the Regas.

Jens,

The 250s make a big difference but so does the speaker positioning.

I previously had lots of crap between the speakers and the speakers close to the back wall. Now they are almost two feet off the backwall and the front is slightly sticking out beyond the TV and related gear that is between the speakers.

I did an A/B dem of the 250/110 with this postitioning and interestingly the location makes a big difference as big a difference as the amp. It is not just the 250 improving the sound.

I have since hooked up the vulcan sub to the ELAs but have only succeeded in muddling up the deep bass. I think I'll have to reconnect the briks to check what the tracks were meant to sound like and then try again when I return from Perth.

Dunno about the DBL devotees but I suspect they live in Nassim rd mansions instead of tiny upper bukit timah appartments.

cheers
Gus

Regarding Mk2s Dave said...

However, one thing irked - they weren't mirror imaged. Every other Rega speaker was.
My Kytes are not mirror imaged either. I can't say that it bothers me much as they sound divine.

Craig, don't get me wrong - I loved the elas - trully; madly; deeply!

It's just that Mk.1's and Mk.3 were/are mirrorimaged; as are/were the ara and alya and (I think) Xel and Naos... It just niggled that the only speaker that wasn't, was my favourite!

I doubt it had a great effect on the sound (make of that what you will Wink ) but from a visual point of view the asymetry just... well ... irked.
