Where to buy CD's on the net?

Posted by: bblesley on 30 June 2005

Hi,

Our small town is about to lose it's last record shop.

Where should I look to buy on the net?

How about for HDCD - never seen one!

Best WIshes.

There are, literally, 'undreds on the web - just a few:

Amazon
CD101
Wow
HMV
Caiman
Vivante
etc., etc...

Just do a search.

Some people on the forum (J.N) reckon the best sounding stuff comes from Japan.

Yer pays yer money and takes yer choice.

For the more esoteric stuff, buy the specialist mags such as Record Collector, Folk Roots etc., etc...

http://www.find-cd.co.uk/

This site compares prices from the 20 or 30 most popular online CD stores and ranks them in price order (inc postage which is good).

Always gets the bargains!

As noted above, many sites. But one those in the U.S. may not know about is Newbury Comics. Good prices and selection.

As for HDCD, there are some CDs that are not even marked. Won't know until you play it. I have a fair amount of HDCDs, some marked (notably Grateful Dead), some not. HDCD.com used to have an artist list (along with other useful stuff) but that has gone away with the Microsoft "update" for HDCD info.

One of the best all-round sites is http://www.jpc.de

Thanks for that website pe-zulu as I was looking for a site which dealt SACDs and HDCDs, but where the style of music wasnt just jazz. This is what Ive found with SACDs and HDCDs - even though the sound quality is leagues ahead of CDs, the only music I found in this format was jazz which I cant stand!!

If you know of any other sites Id be more than grateful!!

Try the following. it's a newish site and i have not yet tried to buy anything through it. But it's the best substitute i've seen for HDCD.COM.

Hello bblesley,

You don't say where you live. Personally I like CDuniverse but the postage from the USA to Ireland is quite expensive.

If you like classical there is 'berkshire record outlet' but they use really expensive delivery options [e.g. UPS delivery rather than postage].

Hope this helps.

My favourite, pe-zulu !

(I have ordered enough CD's from them that they have granted me a permanent discount on all purchases.)

Their web site (including sample quality) is excellent, the search facility very helpful (and forgiving, if you don't know the exact spelling).

Never, ever have they messed my orders up, amazon have 3 times in a year (and then been not very flexible/responsive handling the issues)

cheers

For classical music:-
MDT.co.uk give good service and good value offers via the web -postage 50p or 75p per disc, free over £50 spend
europadisc.co.uk I deal with by phone, once you have ordered you get a monthly mailing of new releases and special offers - free delivery over £20 spent
the-woods.co.uk similarly I deal with by phone or email - all free delivery. Will generally supply any genre of music.

All three are to be recommended.

I've found that CD's recorded in the USA sound better when they are made in the USA.

Some EU 'equivalents' (often on a different label and catalogue number) sound bloody awful by comparison. The difference on Marc Cohn's first (eponymous) album has to be heard to be believed on USA and EU pressings.

My favourite two USA suppliers that I use regularly are Djangos and Tower.

CD Japan are good for the ultimate quality of sound from virtually any CD, and eil are very good for obscure and collectible stuff.

John.
