another hicap vs. fc2 question

Posted by: cyu on 05 January 2004

Hi

I have read many forums on this subject and still seeking some advice. Sure, ultimately I must make a decision on what type of PSu. I have CD5/112/150/ driving Credo speakers. They sound good- somewhat crisp and clean sound but not enough bass. More importantly, not much of sound stage / 3 D.

My current situation is I wont have much of a budget after this month to upgrade. After working for awhile, I am going back to school for a graduate program for 3 years. I have just enough to purchase S/H hicap or FC2 as a last upgrade.

I think many would recommend to get a S/H hicap, but it can only be used for 1 component. However, FC2 can be used for 2 comp. But in terms of sound quality, I understand that a Hicap is much better option. I am slightly leaning toward getting FC2 just for the convenience of powering 2.

Basically, how much better is Hicap to FC2? slight or 2 fold difference?

thank you all for the input

Sorry, I can't comment directly on your dilema, however remember that a S/h hiCap is unlikely to lose you any/much money if you sell it on whereas a new FC2 will if you eventually sell it. (unless you can pick up a s/h FC2).

I can say a HiCap is significantly better than a FC2 but whether for example CD5/Hi and bare 112 is better than CD5/FC 112/FC I do not know!

Get the Hi-Cap, and put it on the 112. Your better power supply should always go on the pre-amp. (Even with Naim's Flat-Cap2, the primary supply is on the pre, with the secondary on the CD5.)

I find that the extra benefit of a Hi-Cap over a Flat-Cap1 or 2 on a CD5 or 3.5 isn't worth the extra money. Yes it's better, but not twice as good. Therefore, if you find a bit more money after getting the Hi-Cap for your 112, then you can get a cheap used Flat-Cap1, and put it on the CD5. Or even better, upgrade to a CDX!
