Charlotte Gainsborough - Nice but not as good as 5:55 which was like the real follow up to Moon Safari . In me 'umble. Of course.

Simon this is good and interesting - thanks and I look forward to the next batch. As an added piece of info, it would be good to know who is listening to which album!

I agree on the Charlotte G. The sophistication of Air beats Beck for me any day so I just prefer 5.55.

As for the Necks Hanging Gardens - good stuff - try the new album Silverwater - excellent.

Tough listen. I enjoyed it more on my second listen but still not one I am reaching for too often.

Midlake - sound like they're trying too hard to be early 70's. Wishbone Ash with a pinch of Jethro Tull via America.

(not that there's anything wrong with those influences)

If Circus Money was on the list .............

Chris Cutler reviewing Silverwater by The Necks:

"Their first studio CD for three years - named for an industrial suburb in Sydney, famous for its correctional facility - Silverwater ranges further and wider than the Necks' earlier releases, exploring a more sectional structure that counterposes more extremes and contrasts, and has a greater sense of forward motion, than usual, though still retaining the long, hypnotic single-track iterative form for which the band has become famous. Layers and skeins of overdubs and textures give way in places to almost empty stretches, and there is much play with asynchronous time. Paradoxically, for a band famous for its slow, cycling, repetition, the Necks show again that they work hard not to repeat themselves"

Sounds too good to miss!

The Eels album is fantastic, and the Sylvian is worth purchasing just for 'Orpheus' alone!
