Stylus Cleaners and other gadgets

Posted by: Not For Me on 03 August 2001

I once had an Audio Technica electronic stylus cleaner, which was a great gadget. I understand that "the mould has broken" and they are not made anymore.

Has anyone found a viable replacement, or an alternative cleaning device / procedure ?

David,

I'm fortunate to still have the AT device - it's brill.

Goldring did a similar device but it wasn't as effective, the brush part was too soft, but it would be a possibility - no idea whether it's still produced but I'd guess it's unlikely.

Linn 'green stuff' is one option, but I won't let it near my MC as I feel too frequent use causes premature wear.

Anyone else with any ideas?

Andy.

I also have an Audio Technica AT637 Electronic Stylus Cleaner and it is a shame that they are no longer available as they were the best of their kind.

Mr. Vibrator is very popular with my wife's girlfriends when they visit. It's a wonder that he has managed to survive their abuse. I once had to frisk one of her drunken guests to retrieve him before he disappeared down some, er, hole. She mumbled something about how he would be the perfect rush hour companion(?).

I also have a Discwasher SC-2 manual stylus cleaning brush which, although not very popular with the women, works very well without resorting to the supplied cleaning fluid. Jerry Raskin sells them for $US 10.00 via his NeedleDoctor Site I recall paying the same amount for mine almost 20 years ago!

The brush head has a nifty little convex mirror on the flip side to help you decide if you need to say AAaaaaaarrrrggh!

Jerry does international shipments via insured Parcel Post.

i also have the Audio Technica AT637 -- have had it for a long time, but unfortunately, not adviced for use on DV XX2.

i also have the Discwasher SC-2 manual stylus cleaning brush -- same problem.

so i resort to using the very soft supplied DV brush, plus very occasionaly, and nervously, some linn green stuff...

on the other rather more imaginative uses of the AT637 ... no comment.

enjoy

Isn't there an "electronic" stylus cleaner or something?? I don't know how it works but if doesn't actually touch the stylus that's got to be a good idea.

What's wrong with the cleaning fluid supplied with the SC-2? I've been using that for years because I don't know any better...

thanks,

Mike,

Most of these contain an alcohol/distilled water solution that can be drawn up the cantilever tube by capillary action and eventually break down the rubber damping block used in most cartridge suspensions.

Ken,

It makes one wonder how a phono cartridge that can trace a high level (RIAA boosted), high frequency signal, encoded into an LP record, for 100s of hours, couldn't survive a couple of passes of an electronic stylus cleaner or stiff brush.

I think that DV has been over cautious in their cleaning warnings due to their customers experiences with their early jewelled cantilever models. I once witnessed one of their Karat series (DV23D?) lose its moving bits upon being gently cued during a dealer demo!

Ah Mr Pig, I see you use saliva.

This substance has well known miracle cleaning properties. I remember when I was a boy, before "wet-ones" were invented, that a drop of Mum's spit on a hankie could remove all sorts of stubborn stains from my face & clothes.

I hadn't thought of using on mu Arkiv II though.

I've tried all sorts. The AT vibrator thing. Some green sandpaper type stuff that was given to me by my dealer when I had my Troika(s) fitted. And at some stage I'm sure I read in a flat earth mag somewhere that licking the stylus was the true way to audio Nirvana. No side-to-side motion, just lick from back to front.

Know I know I've done this, generally after a few pints late at night. So am I a) a sad dufus who believes everything he reads, or b) an enlightened individual with some explianing to do to his girlfriend?
