Anyone using Tannoy Dual Concentrics with Naim?

Posted by: Laurie Saunders on 21 January 2004

Back in the mist of time, when I had 72/hicap/140, I had a pair of Tannoy DCs (sealed box)

Although they had their fair share of colourations, I cannot forget their (IME unique) coherence, dynamics and "life"

Wish I handn`t sold them now.......my ambition is to get hold of a pair again...however, the more more recent variants of the DC driver are not the same?

Maybe it`s a case of "rose tinted specs"....

So.....is anyone out there using Tannoy DCs with naim amps?

Laurie

My father runs a NAT 01 into 52/250 into Tannoy 12inch Gold dual concentrics, in what appear to be well designed home made cabinets. I have a similar system with Wilson Benesch ARCs. The differnces are very interesting. The Tannoys have better PRaT, much better bass, and a rather delicious valve-like character (they are very efficient). They are however quite coloured, have a lot less detail, and are much bigger than the WBs. If I had a room that was suitable for the Tannoys I would happily swap with my Dad (although he would not let them go at any price) - the Tannoys are that good.

I use Tannoy III L/Zs (10 inch D.C.), and still feel they are the nicest speakers to listen to that I've ever heard. They are much happier partnered with a valve amp though and the Naim system doesn't do them justice. Also, the old Tannoys have very low power handling (about 15 Watts RMS) so would live a life of danger in many Naim systems.
Avoid Tannoy drivers with the foam rubber surrounds, cos they rot.

Damn.....I`m starting to think I must get a pair...or else get hold of some DC drivers and build my own(sealed) cabinets.

(I believe it is still possible to get the drivers from the likes of Wilmslow Audio?)

The few replies so far suggest that the things that I remember being so good about them were not imaginary

About 5 years or so ago, I helped my son buy some second hand Hifi from a chap in Bracknell.

He had a valve amplifier connected into a pair of Tannoy speakers which he purchased new in 1969. I think they were called Amershams. They were about 30" high and say 20"/22" wide.

Although they were sited in a small dining room, they had a wonderful mellow and full sound about them. I have often thought about buying a pair.

Is this what you guys are talking about. If it is there was an article in HiFi News about a home system using the biggest ones with scalloped cabinet. My god they were BIIGGG!! He was a bachelor. Nobodý with a SWMBO would be allowed those in th eliving room.
The guy was running them with valve monoblocks, active, with special crossovers, I think.

I was thinking of the newer DC drivers, avoiding the foam surrounds described above, and using a standard sealed box, rather than horn loading

The pair I used to own used an 8 incher, with polyprop cone & rubber surround in a sealed box. They were v. sensitive....about 92dB/watt/metre i recall, and went VERY loud with tight, punchy bass..they didn`t go all that deep though. What i remember was the incredible coherence/seamlessness of them, the incredible focus, great dynamics and grip, and the abilty to give good stereo soundstages without having to sit in one "hotspot"

As I stated, they were coloured...(aren`t some of the greatest speakers.......?)

I have a pair of Dual concentric MKIII's (10"). They were used with my Naim system when I first got it back in '99. When I got SBL's, the Tannoy's were demoted to my HK system. They couldn't stand up in any considerable way to the authority and musicality of the SBL's. The Tannoy's are a good speaker but it's true they are more suited to tube systems.

Of course room geometry, arrangement and all the rest of the system has to be put into the equation as well. Maybe he had an acoustically sympathetic room for the Tannoys whereas mine clearly favored the late model SBL's.

Hi Laurie,

I have an up to date Wilmslow Audio catalogue here and have had a look through for you. KEF Uni-Q custom installation drivers are available (meant for wall/ceiling mounting but no real reason why a cabinet couldn't be used). No DC Tannoy drivers (or indeed any Tannoy drivers) are in the catalogue.

Prices aren't quoted for the KEF drivers - maybe give them a ring on 01455 286603?

Hope this helps.

Richard.

I bought a pair of Tannoy Eatons (10 inch ported cabinets), new in 1978. They were with me throughout my introduction to Naim equipment in the early 1980s. I still have them in storage, having not used them in over 15 years.

You will be able to see them in E Bay before too long as they and all my old Naim kit, must finally go!

I believe Tannoy has stopped selling these units.

I may be looking at a pair of Tannoys this coming week.

Quickie questions

1. Do Tannoys have a sweet spot

2. Do they need to be toed in

3. Do you push them up against the wall.

Many thanks

Mick,

It depends on which units you are using. Mine were on stands, away from the wall and slightly toed in, Yes there was a sweet spot, but not as focused as with the panel speakers I use now.
