SuperNait retail prices GBP vs. EUR
Posted by: Klout10 on 21 June 2008
Dear all,
Can someone please explain to me the following:
According to the April 2008 price list, the Naim SuperNait retail price is GBP 2.400
(approximately EUR 3.040).
However, here in the Netherlands the current retail price is EUR 3.950! I know the VAT over here is 19% instead of 17.5% Furthermore the shipment costs from the UK to the Netherlands have to be paid, but difference in price is so large I would consider buying a SuperNait in the UK!!
Any thoughts on this subject are welcome...
Regards,
Michel

Hi Michel,
I understand how you feel, and with the fall of the pound currency buying in the UK gets more interesting,.. but instead of putting your question on the forum, maybe you should consider giving Latham Audio a call for an explanation
As I am part of the Latham team I await your call. Enjoy your sunday!

Ricardo,
The difference is about EUR 900, but I'm pretty sure there must be a good reason for it!
Please share it with us...
Enjoy your sunday as well!

Naim cannot change their European prices with every change in exchange rate, and a little while ago the prices would have been much closer. A simple option would be to pop over to the UK and buy it here.

The Pound has been falling against the Euro most of this year. UK exports should be getting more competitive. This should have been reflected in the April price changes, ie the differential you refer to of EUR900 should be a lot less than that now IMHO!

No price changes in The Netherlands this year so far...
The prices I refer to are the latest I know of...

Michel

Maybe Latham should have the chance to explain it exactly.
There has always been a significant differential between UK prices and Benelux prices ( Also other parts of continental Europe) which is really not obviously connected to the exchange rate fluctuation, presumably to cover the costs of the distributor who represents an extra link in the chain that is not required in the UK.
Obviously there is the cost of local warranty support as opposed to having to ship it back to the UK at your own cost (unless you get an understanding UK dealer who will support it on his ticket).
regards
Geoff

Good question Michel.
As Ikoun has observed there's a lot of it about.
Shahinian Hawk loudspeakers were double the price here (UK) when I compared with the U.S.A. 18 months ago.
Naughty Ricardo!
You should be registered as a trade member.

A nice thing about the Internet is that it makes price comparisons of this sort very easy for consumers.
Its no accident that UK buyers have been shopping in the States in ever increasing numbers and savvy US Internet sites regularly offer equipment to European voltages. Sites such as Amazon and ebay even foster these sorts of transactions.
Anyone who has been to a ParcelForce depot in recent years knows the extent of this trade.
This is bound to have an effect on importers/distributors and even exchage rates over the longer term (globalisation, anyone).
Its a fascinating world in which large numbers of consumers can play the import/export game themselves, should they wish. Just keep an eye on rates and buy where it makes sense.
Factor the value of guarantees and any product support in your territory into your calculations. Beware of any VAT and import charges and you're away.
Personally, I would think hard about importing expensive elctronics but media such as movies, LPs, CDs etc...well that is another matter.

Maybe the extra cost is simply because Naim supply their UK dealers direct, whilst in overseas markets they have a middle man (the distributor) so there's an extra layer of admin expenses. The distributor handles service and customer support issues, pays shipping, advertising and promotional costs etc. There's bound to be a cost differential.

Soon I'll probably buy a complete Naim system, my first
. Browsing the UK sites I also saw the price difference between UK and 'meanland' (I live in the Netherlands).
The difference for a Supernait is not an exception. I'm definitely buying my products in UK, saddened that my local dealer doesn't have a benefit (I'm thinking of giving him some cash for his advice).
I understand the extra cost of a middle man / distributor, but by no means the difference can be as huge as 900 Euro for ONE component..

I never thought it would happen: Naim prices in The Netherlands have dropped!
E.g. SuperNait price has dropped by €500, which makes the above mentioned difference €400. This seems very reasonable to me...
The retail price of more products has been changed.

Michel

Hi Michel,
I was in exactly the same situation as you about the Supernait I live in Brussels and this will be my first Naim System
I thought the price difference was unbelievable and dropped a mail over to Malcom Latham to see if he could enlighten me. I have to say he was very open and helpful.
Malcolm was well aware of the issue ( the supernait was the worst example of price difference). There was a reason which he explained but I will not go into here, but as far as I am aware following a meeting he had in in the UK the prices were lowered. The current difference now come from locally funded warranty, marketing VAT differences etc
All I can say is well done Malcom in reacting to the market.
By the way Michel I think the new price list is out but if you need one either I can send you the one I got from Malcom, or you can contact him directly and I am sure he will be only too willing to help.
Let me know how you are getting on with your purchase, especially what speakers !
Cheers,
Barrie

Hi Barrie,
Thank you for your reply and your explanation. When I started this topic, I had the intention to buy a SuperNait in the UK, but I ordered mine last week overhere in Holland. I just didn't dare to take the risk of buying oversees. I have it up and running-in at the moment and I must say it sounds great even right out of the box!
I already have a copy of the new pricelist, but thanks anyway!
Regarding the speakers: I'm using the SuperNait with a couple of (relatively unknown) Sehring Audio S703P loudspeakers - a combination which I enjoy very much!!
Regards,
Michel

Dear All,
if you think that is bad try and buy a sexy european car here in Aus.
Bentley Continental Gt in uk 110,000.00 pounds
Here in Aus it is $400,000.00
now divide this by 2.1 aussie dollars to a pound.
RIP OFF Porsches etc etc are the same.
regards David

David - surely this is so the "tall poppies" can be easily recognised and stigmatised.

Hi Michel,
I was in the same position as you and had Malcolm not been so helpful, I certainly would have bought in the UK. Now, however, with the new prices being much more competative I just need to decide on what speakers to partner the Supernait with and then I will be buying locally ( Nl/B )
Glad you are enjoying the system, funny enough my thinking was also Supernait and CD5x, but I still need to make the final decision on the CD
Cheers

Hi Barrie,
I wasn't able to stretch for the CDX2 and a SuperNait all in one go. The CD5x performs very well, maybe next year I'll change the CD5x for a CDX2.
In the meantime I'm perfectly happy!

Michel
