Antony and the Johnsons wins Mercury award

Never heard of him TBH and have just heard a couple of his tracks while listening to the radio.
How does everyone rate him?
Just had a quick listen to some sound files on the HMV website and must say that his music is very different and he seems to sing with a quite a lot of emotion, I would say its a kind of acquired taste but one that would grow on you the more you listen to it.
I think some of his vocals have a very Jeff Buckley ring to them but he's been compared to Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright etc.
I think I might invest in the nominated album to see what all the hype is about Winker

Thank God there's still one industry award that appreciates good music as opposed to highest sales/whoever will turn up to the awards ceremony.

Long live the MMA!!!!!

I've got the album and it is superb - well done to A&TJ.

Cheers,

I just don't get A&TJ at all. Maybe I need to adjust my aerial or something, but it all sounds (ahem) pish to me...

John

I think you're badly wrong about this. (But that's not a hanging offence!)

Hey, Graham, at least I gave them a listen. I would dearly like to like their music, but after a second listen I still felt bewildered and deeply unimpressed. That said, a third listen might be prudent.

Maybe I need to hear it on vinyl or something Winker

I'm old enough to know that we all like different stuff. That said, it took me two or three listens to get hooked on Antony. It's so different to anything else out there.

Anthony, as I have said elswhere, creeps me out. Nor is he anything new, vocally - try Tiny Tim or John Noble Niles

Just listened to a sample Anthony track on hype - I don't think I'll be investing in a copy if it is all like Paddy's Gone - I agree with Nigel, I just couldn't get it either.

Well, I persisted - iPod and on the computer - and it's beginning to resolve for me: the singer's voice still sounds ridiculous a lot of the time, but the underlying music and message is quite deep and I'll certainly listen again. Still not entirely sold but I will admit that it definitely isn't 'pish' as previously claimed, though I'm still not going to proclaim it to be worthy of the hype...

Tried this (Now I'm a Girl) on the recommendation of 20 year old daughter & almost senior citizen wife. They both thought it was marvellous.
I'm going to arrange to have their hearing checked soon.
In all fairness, different strokes for different folks. I thought the cover was top quality. I thought the album was not my cup of tea.

Between Kinghorn and North Queensferry. Or, arguably, between Earlsferry and Crail. In my case, the former. Though brought up in the latter.
