hi cap to 3.5 or 72?

Just gone mad and ordered a new Hi Cap as a Bday treat (40). Any advice in what to connect it to given I have a Linn as well.

I have a CD5 and 32.5, a little different to your configuration. I recently undertook an experiment to see if it was worth adding a Hi-Cap to the CD5. To do this I temporarily replaced the NAP135s with a 110 and spent some time swapping the Hi-Cap between the CD5 and the 32.5 and eliminating it altogether. My feeling was that the Hi-Cap produced the greatest gain when connected to the pre-amp. Taking into account the fact that this improvement is available to all sources, then this is where I would connect it. However the result of the experiment is that I now have Hi-Caps connected to both the CD5 and the 32.5,

You don't say what equipment you have.

Would agree with above Hicap the 72. I have a just added a Hicap to my 62/140 and the transformation to the sound is amazing. I aslo have a 3.5 with Flatcap. I would say it would be worthwhile seeking out a secondhand Flatcap.

Not wishing to fly in the face of popular opinion and all that.....

BUT,

having been in exactly the same position (cd3.5/72/140), I also pondered the worth of a HiCap on the 72 or cd3.5 (?)

IMHO it took a while for the dealer's advice to sink in fully, but the HiCap turned the cd3.5 into a smoother, less raspy animal all together.
This made the life expectancy of the cd3.5 much longer as it was now (HiCap/cd3.5) much easier to live with, allowing me to appreciate the music!

In the longer term, when I demo'ed a CDX and decided to upgrade, moving the Hicap to the 72 gave a 'double whammy' of an upgrade - improving the scale and dynamics of the audio picture.

To conclude, although the HiCap/72 was tempting at the time, the HiCap/cd3.5 combination did much more for me (finer, more granular sound).

I now suspect that the philosophy 'source first' was being followed (unwittingly by me) by placing the HiCap on the CD3.5

Hope this helps.
