Unorthodox conection of 250 to pre amp
Posted by: David Patterson on 01 March 2004
I just wondered if any one connects their 250 direct to the pre-amp instead of routing via power supply. Being the only amp in the olive series that you can do this to (easily)ie. without using adaptors for 135s or modifying leads ( for other amps with built in pre supply).
I have just done this thereby eliminating the signal run pre to powersupply to power amp. It cuts out a hell of allot of cable and connections.
Any views on this?

Hi David
This an old chestnut.
Apparently; the signal is routed through the power supply to preserve the integrity of the earth.
It should sound worse, the way you are describing.

Best do it the Naim way. Unless you are using a non-Naim pre-amp of course

David,
If it was better the way you've done it, I think Naim would have thought of it by now.

This post makes me think that someone has been reading "that website". Without wishing to stir up trouble the article does raise a valid point, and I for one would like to know the reasoning behind the earthing arangements used by Naim.

I have tryed it simply because it can be done. I always like to try out things that are possible and make my own opinion.
I think it makes sense for Naim to advocate the pre , xxxcap, power route as it fits all permutations of set-up. You can up grade any of the three components without damage.I dont know what feeding the power from the xxxcap and the power from say a 90,140,180 to the preamp might do to any of the components especially if you are silly enough to have the speakers connected.
My comment about cable and connections was with regard to signal. On paper preamp out to 250input via 1 cable should lose less info than pre to hicap to 250 and all the connections that involves.
I certainly have not picked up any hums or buzzes etc. To be honest the hiss is slightly less.
As for sound, sorry cant play it untill Emerdale, Eastenders etc is past!! Oh for a dedicated listening room.
