Bairns in the boozer!

Posted by: Earwicker on 30 April 2005

Am I alone in being EXTREMELY bloody annoyed when some cretin brings his screaming bairn into a pub or restaurant? I was in Weatherspoon's this afternoon for a quiet dram - along with quite a lot of other people - and two scumbags came along with their prams and screaming fucking bairns, driving me and the hundred or so other drinkers up the bloody wall!

Why is it always scumbags and New Man who insist on inflicting their godforsaken progeny on others? Gets right up my hairy snout. There's a strong case to be made for banning bairns from many public places where they can cause annoyance - especially pubs and restaurants. Oh and airoplanes. If I sat their shreiking and screaming, I'd get thrown out; okay if you're a shitting bairn it seems.

Take the bloody things home where they belong.

I thought Weatherspoons was an establishment for for the whole family and as such one should avoid the place like the plague because it would contain noisy rugrats generating noise and confusion and getting trod on and ground into the floor covering etc.

Earwicker,

As the Dad of a sometimes screaming 8 week old I have to say (and I bet this will surprise you) I agree!

It's a strange society that seems obsessed with haranging people who enjoy a smoke with their pint in the quiet corner of a bar and yet people are allowed to subject others to their screaming projeny belching, vomiting, dribbling and shitting all over restaurants and bars up and down the land.

I'm fast learning that parenthood means I seemingly will never get to enjoy a truly peaceful drink in a pub again so I have pretty much stopped trying! I don't believe others should have to suffer though.

Sorry your drink was spoiled.

This City being pretty socially orientated, kids in pubs in the evening are generally not allowed, and I think parents of young babys who wish/decide to take them into smoke filled parlours need a kick up the arse themselves.

When I was a nipper I sat outside of the pub with my little sister. My folks could see us through the window.

We were happy with our bottle of pepsi, a straw and a packet of crisps.

They didn't stay in there long enough for us to get bored with the above.

Kids do not belong in pubs.

Just in case there are a few whisky drinkers out there heading off to Wotherspoons for a dram - it's a beer from Poland.

It's bad enough when the little bastards are working behind the bar picking their noses, and filing their nails, innit.

Damn right. I'm not a fan of kids at all, and I don't think having one is something to be proud of - especially when a LOT of parents are crap at their jobs.

Even now, 12 years after poor Jamie Bulger (sp?) you see kids running amok with parents ignoring them, and then people wander why kids go missing. Put reins on kids about town (a kid's just as much of a hazard as a non-leashed dog), or leaving the little sods at home has to be the way forward.

Banning prams during lunch hours sounds fair to me too. If you MUST see your kid at lunchtime, go and visit it at the childminder's/home, don't clog up already overcrowded streets with yer poncey 3-wheeler buggies.

And no, they should NOT be allowed in pubs.

Under the supervision of a responsible adult carer of course.

I don't dislike kids, but I do when I'm having a beer. Alcohol and children definitely do not mix.

What a splendidly grumpy thread! Had to check that I wasn't on the grumpy forum by mistake.

Sadly I think it's just yet another sign of the times when people persist in their 'right' to spoil other people's quiet drink by insisting on inflicting their badly behaved brats on us. I don't want to be an unwitting spectator to the bringing up of other people's kids. Often times it's the parents that are the problem though; I well remember enjoying a quiet drink with my wife in a subarban pub in a leafy locale on a brilliantly sunny Bank Holiday when there was a rumpus from the bar area. It transpired that a middle class mother was busy raising hell because she wasn't allowed to take her kids out into the beer garden (pubs policy). What followed was an incredible display of shouting and foot stamping from someone old enough to know better (the mother). What kind of example is that in front of your kids? Why do these people think that they are more important than us!!???

Best regards,
Mole Man

It is a problem taking kids out - mine are quite well behaved but I still only take them to places where it seems pretty obvious that kids are OK. A posh restaurant I wouldn't - they wouldn't appreciate the quality and service!

You refer I assume to UK, and as well as changing the concept of Public House to Priv, I quite agree with you, though I've never experienced good service in UK to date, innit.
