What Festival 2008?
Posted by: 555 on 25 May 2008
I have had my best & worst experiences (both musical & general!) at festivals.
This year I've already enjoyed the Orkney Folk Festival.
It's a really friendly uncommercialised event.
A great mix of music in a lovely part of the U.K.
I strongly recommend it!
My other festival visit this year is World Of Music, Arts & Dance at Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.
Also a friendly & relatively uncommercialised shindig.
This years line-up is the best in years IMHO.
The W.O.M.A.D. campsites have much better facilities than your average fest'.
For those (like me) seeking a treat & a good nights sleep there's
Deluxe Camping in Shikar Tents & Boutique Camping (yet to go on sale) this year.
There's a good 'early bird' offer for the Shikar Tents (nearly 40% off),
if booked & deposit paid by 9th June.
I understand the luxury camping sells out very quickly, so if you are tempted don't delay!
Looks like we're in for a summer of good weather,
so what festival(s) are you going to?

Well, aside from the various Edinburgh festivals (in particular the International, Fringe and Jazz festiva), I shall be down in Suffolk next month for the Aldeburgh Festival.
I'm also going to be in Amsterdam briefly for a rare performance of Messiaen's only opera, St Francis of Assisi (and have also been asked to attend the semi finals of the Dutch jazz competition since a friend of a friend is playing).
Then, of course, there's the BBC Proms, but I won't be making it to them this year.
regards, Tam

WOMAD has changed the web page for Boutique Camping.
My post with a link for this now doesn't work,
but this link will.

Three Choirs Festival at Worcester [in Hereford and Gloucester in a triennial run] this year. Too expensive, and the acoustic of Worcester Cathedral is an abomination for smaller scaled music, but good for Gerontius.
For some reason it is on the programme to do the Bach Christmas Oratorio in the middle of the summer! It was very well done in Hereford earlier in the year, so perhaps that serves as a preliminary run...
The Cathedral is ten minutes walk for me!

When festivals go wrong ...
Gatecrasher Summer Sound System 2008 and BoutiqueCamping.Net Ltd
You are receiving this because you were a guest with us at this year’s Gatecrasher weekend event. Thank you to those of you who took the time to send us your feedback. The camping experience fell short of the standards expected by BoutiqueCamping.Net and we appreciate that your experience was not the exclusive accommodation that you expected. We have met at length with the festival organisers since the event and made the following observations with them:
1. The VIP campsite was over subscribed and poorly managed. This resulted in overcrowding and a substantive overspill of people and tents into the Boutique Camping area.
2. As a result of this ‘swamping’ by tents, our accommodation’s function was inhibited detracting from the ideal experience. In particular, the tipis’ smoke flap poles could not be moved around the exterior of the structures to manipulate the canvas flaps which would have limited the ingress of rain which some of you obviously noted.
3. Similarly our planned reception unit proved unmanageable due to the volume of tents surrounding it and therefore our presence in the field and our service to you was impacted (We did post mobile phone numbers on the side of our unit and thank those of you who did meet with us and managed to utilise this contact point).
4. The toilets and shower facilities were therefore also oversubscribed and the mess in the field due to the volume of campers was significant.
Gatecrasher Summer Sound System festival organisers have acknowledged full responsibility for the above issues and recognised that BoutiqueCamping.Net Ltd was unable to produce the camping experience that they pride themselves in.
By way of goodwill gesture and recompense Gatecrasher have agreed to send all BoutiqueCamping.Net guests 2008 VIP souvenir packages and also offer FREE 2009 VIP weekend camping tickets to those guests.
All this plus many artists were unable to perform on the mainstage & one 'guest' died!

Talking of gatecrashers, one "layclerk" friend in the Hereford Choir asked if he could crash at mine if there is a good party, post concert, in the Worcester week! Not a gatecrash, but a privelelge of course!
I doubt if I shall get through the doors for any of the concerts this year, but I have been known to listen from outside a window before now!

The first one is the best - and the only one guaranteed to have sunshine!!, not the best line up this year, but will still beat all others until Bestival.

Is anyone from here going to Glastonbury?
I just got my weekly concert notice emails, Seetickets are trying to interest people in Glastonbury by saying the weather will be good. This is a far cry from just a few years ago when I the festival sold out in a few hours.
While there are some good bands playing, there does not seem to be the highlights that made this such a great festival a few years ago. No bands (for me) that I think are worth spending four nights in a tent to see.
Maybe the mainstream of music has moved away from my taste, but do others see this year's lineup and think 'so what'.
e-festivals linup search - enter glastonbury and search.

No & I can't say there's much in the line-up for me.
I think the last two summers have been bad for festivals re: weather,
which has depressed ticket demand.
Metcheck provide a handy events weather forecast.
These are updated daily, & the weather for Glasto does look good.
