Dear Fritz,

My knowledge is not something you can reasonably make any judgement on, (or even reasonably speculate if it extends beyond jam making!) from what you know of me.

Equally my previous post is factually correct: Poles have as much right to live and work in UK as you (Ex-UK, if I am not mistaken) do to live and work in Germany. I don't confuse Britain with the rest of the EU! I think in many ways Britain is far more enlightened.

I am glad Norway is currently outside the EU as well...

So you've missed me. I've been busy watching the football. Did I miss something?

I've got that book. Presented to me on the occasion of my Barmitzvah, 19th Sivan 5724. Sadly, I probably haven't opened it from that day to this (until just now).

I've voted.

My great grandparents came to England in the 1890s to escape the Poles and Lithuanians.
Now they're all coming over here.

Of course my wife's a German and non-Jewish so my children aren't either. Her father's father was a schoolteacher who said that the Fuhrer was lying and got thrown out of his village. Lucky to live I suppose. Her mother's father was a tailor. I've never asked.

I have it on my bedside table. I often pick it up and marvel at Sabine's eyes. I will read it after Don Quixote (600 pages of small print). I note she married a rich guy but still yearns for the jungle. Hardly surprising in my view. I've been in Belize and deep in the Philippine jungle with a native who used to teach US Marines jungle survival before they were posted to Vietnam. I loved it. I took SWMBO (she thought we were going to an exclusive beach resort, you should have seen her face when she found out where we were really going - but she loved it to)- if you really were a RHR man you may have read about the chindits? The native we spent two weeks with in the jungle was the most peaceful man I have ever met.

Whils't just briefly watching the 'news' headlines on er., Sky News; Adam Boulton (So-called political corresspondent) mistakenly said Forest Green instead of Forest Gate, didn't check himself and then introduced Patsy Hewitt of all people to put one off of one's Sunday breakfast. I personally think that says a lot about his knowledge of London (or obvious lack of), and going by the spin that Sky turns of late, it's really quite difficult to get the drift of where actually they're coming from in general innit, though they did have a brilliant Sports commentator yesterday who talked serious sense re England etc, (main reason I ever watch it) (Obviously trained by the brilliant Mr Our Matt Robinson who seemingly knows everything about everything in the history of mankind, and Swindon) too.

Fredders me Old Elephant beer slurper! I wonder if Polish folk presently working (legally in UK) require a residence/work permit? When 'Brits' first came here for instance they required a residence permit (3 months initially stamped in passport) (as did Germans going to UK). Providing one had a job (with contract to prove it, and an address ('everybody' (all citizens) is registered with the local police here) after 3 months, one got a 5 year permit (work permit not required for EU folk at the time), then after 5 years, if one was still working etc, (and clean tax & police record) one got 1 for life (if on dole it was maybe another few years, and would so continue). These days Brits do not require such things (and only the bank in the past has wanted to see it re. loans etc). Poles (NOW) require such a residence permit here, so I wonder how the Brits, who are obviously so paranoid about black workers and asylum seekers deal with this, innit?*

As I've Oh so often'tiresomely' stated, 'I do not lie on this forum (except now) as well as having absolutely no problem whatso'ever with seemingly talking to myself for hours on end , as is obviously the case in this place this moaning, innit.

Last friday at around three in the afternoon at work I found myself in one of those horrible situations where one has no control over things (stone cold sober and thirsty). I normally finish at 5, and was obviously looking forward to this long weekend of fun and drinking (after Church naturally), smoking and first class entertainment on this forum (Oh and the football too of course). As mentioned afore I only have a five minute walk home so was slowly coming down from a strenuous day of intensive translation (concentration heavy) and other mundane everyday niceties like humping chairs and things around the place. My colleague (who I rarely see) came up to me and asked a favour, as he had an interview at 4. Could I possibly stand in for him at 4 (at a location over an hour away by foot) as he really couldn't make it, I was not pleased to put it mildly. This guy was unemployed for 7 years (he's an architect by trade) and a really decent Chap (even though he is Bavarian). My boss was aware of the situ and I feel she wouldn't ask me personally as I might well give her a scary look! My contract (as does my colleague's) finishes at the end of October, where we'll both 'happily' have to return to the joys of dole queue.

To cut a long story long, I agreed, went home quickly brushed me railings and got my arse down to the old 17th century Villa in question where a Professor DR DR was to give a lecture on the place and try to persuade local folk to cough up dosh to do it up*. There's me expecting to just sit by a laptop and projector and press the next slide when he gave the nod in front of some old pensioners (no remote). Dressed in my sloppy workclothes, I suddenly find myself sitting in the middle of a closed square of tables (The Prof didn't even say hello or acknowledge my presence) (last minute stand in), maybe he was nervous (as this was his baby, my colleague had done the drawings/Plans & marvellously so I must say too.) still an arrogant rude old git as far as I'm concerned. Kicks off at 4 (lights out) (I get a five second rundown on the laptop (never used the kit afore). I'm surrounded by slightly well dressed local politicians, businessmen, the Mayor, etc, and I think to myself (God, I'm not sure if I can handle this). Prof starts speaking in such a heavy accent, I had to seriously read the text on the screen and his body language to know when to change (he fucking expected me to be bloody telepathic almost) and with other folk talking besides (like they do in Westminster, drives me nuts). It all lasted an hour or so, and my nerves were nearly as bad as at the end of the FA Cup final recently (though totally sober). I was locked in the middle so couldn't escape when the pics were over, and the silly question time began. I know I did a good job under the circumstances, and my boss who was sitting behind me, finally gave me a way out, don't want me hearing how they're gonna spend all that Taxpayers dosh (eh Mick: EU stuff too, so also indirectly from your own pocket)*

My first beer did taste rather good though after that experience, no thanks or comment from anybody, I couldn't get out of there quick enough. Had a nice letter waiting for me at home to tell me when the modernization of my flat here begins. The heating and windows etc, and my rent will rise by a whopping 35%. This means that when I'm back on the jolly old Nat King Cole, not only will I be unemployed once again, but my new rent will excede the allowance given by the State by some 100, which I'll have to find for myself somehow + new Gas Bills (first time ever). As said afore this is no moany post, just a fact of life, with no thrills attached, otherwise I must move house, this is not a sob story, and I haven't even mentioned the impending visit of the baillifs yet (posts-passim) which doesn't exactly inspire one by any stretch of the imagination to buy nice toys and things now does it?

Fritz von Obviously Our Fredders is the most astute musically-orientated member on this forum and as well as being a Naim kit owner, likes to drive his beloved old Banger of a Wolwo. I suspect even if he were much richer, he'd still keep that motor, I wonder if others on here would do the same? I think not somehow*

Dear Fritz,

I am not at all convinced that the British (your word, and one that takes in Scotland and and Wales) as a whole are paranoid about foreign workers. In my experience there is a range of views. But this experience is only in England. Some here are concerned and some are not. No doubt if there was higher unemployment, more thought on it would be the case, and more paranoia the result...

Personally, I find no problem working with foreign workers, and it seems to me that of these, the problems are more significant between say Kurds, Albanians, Turks, and those with an old European culture. Naturaly enough we have no Germans in my work, as on the whole I think that most Germans would find coming to UK to work in low paid work would lead to a possible cut in their standard of living, as Germany has been prosperous for a rather long time (compared to the territories from where most of the foreign morkers come).

The reasons why many of them are here vary, from such as polical instability at home, to quite significant economic hardship. I think many want to return to their homelands as the situation at home, for them, improves, and others will return when they have accumulated enough money to establish themselves with homes and so forth. Some will stay for the duration, but not most I would think.

In the specific instance of the Poles I know well, I imagine coming a new country is quite an adventure, but it does seem that they can be resident without a job, though I don't know the details of whether they can claim dole in this circumstance - possibly not as it seems that both of them went fruit picking last summer to keep themselves afloat. The Polish have mostly been found accomodation by Polish work agancies, and then usually this same agancy will find them a suitable appointment to earn their livings. Neither of my two lads, actually found their work this way, but simply applied for work and got it on their own initiative though both were found accomodation through a Polish agancy. Having been asked to help, and honestly knowing next to nothing other than what common sense would suggest, I have helped the one get his National Insurance Number issued, and it does seem that apart from keeping the Home Office appraised of the situation there is very little beyond some red tape to be sorted out. In other words they are allowed to live in UK without a job, and properly legal.

An interesting one is that many will stay till they are 27 years old as that is the age when liability for Plish National [Army] Service lapses, and the Polish Army does not sound a particualarly life enhancing experience for the majority of young men, in my view, given what I have been told about it.

Of course my understanding of what is required of a Brit in Germany today in a similar way concerning residency and work permits, is based on what I have read in the media over the years, and may be inaccurate in aspects. You would be far better placed to explain what is actually the case!

It came as a surprise to me that a Pole (and presumable any EU citizen where that country runs an ID card system) can stay here without a Passport, and rely solely on the ID card for travel and ID. It stands to reason that if I for example went to another EU country, then I would require a current Passport, but then we have no ID card system in UK...

All the best to you, from Fredrik

A good personal rundown Our Fredders, though I referred to the 'media and politicians paranoia here'. If a Brit (you for instance decided to come here now and go on the dole or get benefits) your chances would be nil* If a German did the same in UK today their chances would be nil as well. If (either direction) qualify for benefits, ie having worked long enough etc, and have the relevant paperwok, they may well be lucky, otherwise not a chance in hell, and anybody who says otherwise is giving only part of their picture, referring to idle gossip, or simply not telling the truth.

Fritz von as a British Citizen though resident here, I cannot just mosey along to an NHS Doc and get treatment, I require the basis of my Insurance card from here (that is how it is in reality today). For those that say they go to UK for treatment (and get it) fail to mention that further down the road the bill for that treatment is forwarded to their relevant system, wether it be Denmark or Germany or Holland, etc, and is deducted accordingly*

Dear Fritz,

As ever the News Media have a defective way of reporting the facts, and I suspect we both read what is written with a least a pinch of salt, for the details omitted. The devil is in the details, and indeed, when I helped complete the NI forms for my one Polish cohort, I did wonder how many regulations had bee broken without intent. None it seems except for the timing which in any case was no case, because the letter requiring actions was dated after the time when the sctions should have been taken! A few photo-copies of the originals soon verified this situation, and the subsequent actions by the Revenue and Home Office have been efficient and carried out with good grace. I do wonder thoug if it took me to remove the stress from the situation.

Interestingly my other Polish friend had no such 'problemettes,' so it shows how mistakes creep in with any system.

For me to get into Norway would be very much more difficult even with half my familly there! Again, it is a question of having a job contract and a residence before even a work permit would be granted, and then I think there is a considerable period before full naturalisation can be applied for. Even then this is a privevelege to be granted in the light of being a spotless candidate, and not a right after time.

ATB from Fredrik

The Yanks are playing an interesting game at present by trying to up the ante against Iran. They're attempting to bring €urope (and Germany included) into their strategy as well, and I feel that if any construed threat to Israel is percieved on their part in reality Bush (without needing to consult Congress) as CIC can launch a pre-emptive air strike on certain targets (and will indeed do so).

Fritz von Even future allies from Iran such as Our Nobel prize winning woman's rights lawyer has made it clear that no matter how much she despises her present Govt, if Yankeeland plays hero politics, she and many like her will be Iranians as one first and USA the eternal enemy, and I can quite see her point actually*
