CDS to CD2 upgrade!

Posted by: tonytronic on 06 April 2003

Well, I did it.
I sent the old CDS in (plus it's Burndy) to Naim for the official upgrade to CDS2. The dealer warned me it might be rough to start with and would need some time to run-in - it's effectively a spankin' brand new latest spec CDS2, with the latest PIC fitted (copy-protected CD's are no problem with this fix in place).
I'd been using my old CDi while waiting for the CDS2 to arrive.
Anyway, I exchanged the CDi for the CDS2, wondering whether this upgrade was going to be worthwhile.
Very interesting! Not what I'd called 'rough' at all. Imaging not there yet, but very promising - good detail and definitely got that 'boogie factor' pretty well straight out of the box.

Anyway, I then deliberately left it around 40 hours before trying it again....
Oh my! So much of everything all happening at once. Good imaging now, but also much better drive behind rhythms, with so much more detail, better highs, tighter bass, so musical. By comparison, the old CDS was too smooth - a little ponderous, deep but slightly loose bass, very polite, but lacking in pace and assertion. This CDS2 upgrade is the best move I've made so far, even beats the Supercap upgrade and that's saying something!
And to think that I nearly followed the advice of someone on this forum who proposed to keep their CDS. I am so very glad I didn't do that!
This new CDS2 blows the pants off an 8 year old CDS and it's not even run-in yet!

Wonder if the old CDPS would be bettered by an XPS2...?
I'll worry about that some other day. For now I'm in upgrade heaven.
Don't need the CDI anymore!
